SECTOR SPOTLIGHT ELECTRIC GUITARS

Yamaha RGX A2 £397

This stunning guitar was designed to bring quality tones to a lightweight guitar, something achieved with considerable success. The body consists of a lightweight core sandwiched between hard woods on top and back, three metal tubes under the bridge plate transmit string vibration to the body, and return body vibration to the bridge. The top board responds to string vibration passing through the bridge. The backboard resonates, exciting the entire body structure and creating a full, powerful, and resonant tone with distinctive presence and body that are nothing short of unique. Way cool.

Tanglewood Signature TSB 67 £299.95

Unashamedly slotting into a hole in the market left by a more famous entry to mid-priced brand, Tanglewood’s Signature electrics offer (with the TSB 67, for example) a solid mahogany body and set neck, two Entwistle Darkstar pickups, rosewood fingerboard, quality biding, Kluson machines and the sort of tone to give players a whole lotta Rosie for just 300 quid.

Lag A200ST £425

The new Lag Arkane models are superb instruments, featuring contoured flamed maple tops and solid basswood bodies with a couple of high-powered EMG- Hz pickups slotted in. A hard maple bolt-on neck and a Floyd Rose trem system rounds off this quite delightful – and surprisingly priced – guitar.

conscientious company – such as Headstock is – representing it, there is a lot to be gained from stocking any portion of this enormous catalogue of class axes. Shine guitars – made by the Saein company in

Korea, which creates OEM models for several other top brands – are superbly made, have the widest range of product of any manufacturer and are at a very competitive prices to give the retailer a good margin, which is why, Intermusic tells us, more and more dealers and players are turning away from the famous names, to Shine. While there is little to separate Shine from other

guitars in this price bracket (quality woods, Grover tuners, sturdy hardware), the Shine range has some of the best-looking guitars in this sector. Classic shapes are often enhanced with some neat binding and transparent finishes over attractive wood grains. Also worth noting that Intermusic is offering good discounts for MI products bought from its new dealer portal on the intermusic.com website.

MORE FAMOUS NAMES Yamaha, of course, turned the electric guitar world on its head when it launched the Pacifica, upping the expected standard of budget to mid-priced guitars in one fell swoop and in doing so captured a huge portion of the market – for a while at least. The Pacifica continues today, offering alder bodies and maple necks, custom Alnico pickups, coil taps, block saddle vintage trem and a ring-mounted rear pickup – all features of higher-priced models. Slipping comfortably and with perfect timing

into a somewhat gaping hole in the electric guitar market left by a now hard-to-find brand, the excellent Signature by Tanglewood (launched at Musikmesse in 2010) offers a range of six classically styled electrics ranging from £129.95 up to the L-type at £369.95 – although there is the smart, beginner’s half-sized electric at £99.95. Aria excels in this mid-priced sector, with dozens of models that dealers and teachers will often suggest as their students’ and customers’ first
