EVENT PREVIEW NAMM

JOHN HORNBY SKEWES HALL E 1212 Making its debut at NAMM 2011 is the headline-grabbing Fret King Super-matic self- tuning guitar. The Super-matic is the first ever guitar to feature the innovative, outstanding Wilkinson ATD HT440 self-tuning hard tail guitar bridge, and is set to change the way guitarists across the world approach their instruments. Simply put, the Super-matic is a guitar that tunes itself – in seconds and at the touch of a button. Beginning in standard E tuning, you can switch to open G, DADGAD, open D, or even create up to five of your own personal tunings. The choice is yours with the new Super-matic. Other Fret Kings at the show will be the Blue Label series, including the Ventura Super 60, Esprit 3, Elan Super 50 and 60, the Eclat and Eclat 2. Fret-King Blue Label basses at NAMM will include the Ventura 80, the Esprit 4 and the Perception 4. The hand-crafted Fret King Green Labels and a number of the luxurious Fret-King Atelier and Stvdio models will also be making their way to the JHS stand.

Another huge presence will be the Vintage

guitar range, including the Vintage Icon series, which features classic-shaped high quality guitars in a number of models, all with vintage distressed finishes. A number of

Vintage Icon guitars have been made to the exacting standards of world- renowned guitarists such as Thomas Blug and Mick Abrahams (Jethro Tull and Blodwyn Pig).

TANGLEWOOD HALL B 5467 As the only UK guitar company on the main show floor, Tanglewood will be on a new booth – twice the size of 2010’s – and a line-up of new products to match (some previewed in Shanghai). The company will be showing six new ranges. The new Sundance Historic guitars

have been created to meet the demand for a simple, understated, 1940s style solid top guitar, and comprise 000, dreadnought and slope shoulder models in both electro and acoustic versions and two finishes. Designed under the stewardship of

Michael Sanden, these instruments represent great value, and are built with the latest parallel bridge system, Fishman Sonitone eqs and soft V neck profiles. The new stripped-down Roadster

series of acoustics, travel guitars and electros began as a travel range with laminate acoustics and solid topped electros, but has been expanded to include a 000 folk version, and a super folk electro model. A brand new Evo Exotic series,

manufactured from laminated koa, makes its debut, as well as solid Engelman spruce and Canadian red cedar models. The Grand Reserve Rosewood models with Fishman eq systems were created as a premium model between Premier and Sundance. These are

upgraded Rosewood Reserve models, with AA Englemann spruce tops. The company will also be showing the new Premier ‘sub-category’ to the Premier Historic and its new Traffic Light tuners (including a tuner/capo).

ROCK HOUSE (HAL LEONARD): HALL C 4618 The Hal Leonard booth, as well as exhibiting its vast range of publications, will be hosting Rock House’s shindig on the Saturday of the show at 4pm, taking the form of a meet and greet with as many of the Rock House artists as possible. This will include Alexi Laiho, Rob Balducci, Gary Hoey, Gus G and more, giving dealers the chance to get up close, get handshakes and pictures taken. The music education publisher has

a pretty unique system, in that anyone who buys a DVD set also gets free access to supplementary lessons on the Rock House website and the chance to become part of the music- making community that has been building very quickly indeed. Recent releases of note include the Gary Hoey Need for Lead set and the Buzz McGrath 7 String Fretribution. Rock House will also be previewing

its new Teacher-Based Curriculum, which, the company says “is totally going to change the way stores with teaching programmes teach students, train the teachers and hold them accountable for the successful experience students have.” The system includes print, audio, DVDs, web-based material, a ‘checks and balance’ system and range of other items. The full launch will be around April.
