I WOKE UP THIS MORNING

Director of International Affairs – NAMM BETTY HEYWOOD

Betty Heywood describes her highly varied role and the amount of effort that goes into organising a goliath event like the NAMM show…

through my emails first. Some people say you shouldn’t sort your emails first but rather tick something off your project list, but I’m too curious not to read what’s been going on in the rest of the world. I’ll then read some news online, as well as the various newsletters that I get sent. I moved from California to Portsmouth

which are in Europe and Asia. At first, it’s all about preparing for the NAMM show and that involves helping with visa, hotel and membership enquiries. Come December everyone begins to realise that the show is quickly approaching and people from all four corners of the world are starting to look forward to it and getting excited about it. We are partnering with the International Society of Music Education (ISME), as well as the International Music Council (IMC), who will both be holding strategy meetings during the show and we are very happy to be hosting them. and phone calls. At five, I take part in a daily meeting, dialling in on the phone to find out what’s going on in the other departments, which is particularly important for those of us who work offsite – there are two colleagues in New York and one in Arizona. I love Skype, as it allows me to speak to

my colleagues (and particularly my boss, Joe Lamond) face to face – I think it helps cutting down on travel.

I’ll then finish work around six, but even

when I’m home I’ll still dip into emails in the evening so that my colleagues receive a reply in real time. Most evenings my husband Huw and I will cook together, and then watch a movie – I love films. Or I curl up on the sofa in front of the fire with a good book, and some good music.
