The Parlour, Kettering
LOCATED IN a quiet, rural setting near Kettering, just outside the town of Northampton, The Parlour is one of best-equipped facilities in the south midlands area of the UK. It is only an hour from London and Birmingham with excellent road and rail access. The Parlour’s air-conditioned control
room is spacious and acoustically designed. The room has been treated with various absorbers and bass traps to provide an accurate mixing environment that is conducive to mixes that translate perfectly to outside systems. The room is isolated from the other
rooms and features a floating wood floor, comfortable sofa and lines of sight to both the live room and the isolation booth. A 420 square-foot live room can accommodate large groups of musicians. The acoustics in this room are said to be world-class, making a huge impact on signals recorded in it. According to the studio website, in the ‘lively’ end of the room, drums sound “huge and vibrant”, while the ‘dead end’ provides an ‘intimate sound’. The room includes movable gobos to tailor the acoustics for the required sound. It is fully isolated from the control room, isolation booth and the outside world. It also features a floating wood floor and good air circulation. To ensure maximum comfort while recording at The Parlour recording
studio, all of the facility’s clients have access to its lounge area. The lounge area features comfortable leather sofas, slate bed pool table, 32-inch LCD TV, fully fitted kitchen with breakfast bar, toilet with shower, wireless broadband and classic arcade games.
The Parlour is staffed by Neil Haynes and Russ Russell. Haynes is the studio manager and in-house producer/engineer/mixer. He has over 15-years experience and specialises in rock, metal, indie and acoustic music. He has worked with Immicus, The Fallen, Sympathy State and Doctor Fonda among many others. His colleague Russell has been producing, engineering and playing for over 20 years. He has worked in every genre, finding success with artists such as Birmingham death metalers, Napalm Death, The Wildhearts and Bradford’s New Model Army.
The Parlour is not just a recording studio – it also offers a high quality CD mastering service and four acoustically designed rehearsal rooms fully equipped with PA systems and backline. Furthermore, in a service that demonstrates its dedication to the success of its clients, it even offers a unique four-day music recording and mixing workshop designed to help bands that prefer to do some of their recording at home.

Blueprint, Manchester
BLUEPRINT STUDIOS in Manchester, UK, is as much a recording studio as it is a live venue, rehearsal space and one-stop-shop for bands, producers and record labels. Its main tracking room, named the Big Room after Elbow recorded their third album there, can host up to 250 people. The room is linked to both studios for recording and benefits from natural lighting during day sessions. It also features a complete bar with staff and can be hired for video shoots, album launches, concerts and workshops. It was recently re-floored and soundproofed. Blueprint features two recording studios, each with isolation booths. Studio One has a Neve VR Legend 36 console. The board is linked to a Pro Tools HD3 Accel rig with over 200 plugins. Alongside the Neve are pre amps and channel strips by Tubetec, Universal Audio, Avalon and SSL.
Studio Two is equipped with a
24-channel Digidesign D-Command. To warm up the sound on the front end, the studio also has API, Amek, Focusrite, Tubetec and Avalon channel strips and pre amps. A Pro Tools HD3 Accel system also resides in Studio Two with a Tascam DV-RA1000 HD recorder for two-track recording.
Both studios
have Apple Logic as well as Pro Tools compatibility, and they share a
microphone stock including Neumann U87s and KM184s, as well as a
Brauner VM1, AKG C414 and C451, in addition to the usual pieces from Blue, Sennheiser, Shure and Audio-Technica. All rooms, even the lounges at Blueprint were designed to inspire, with eccentric layouts by Igloo Designs. Whether it is needed for a live gig or recording an album, Blueprint is a versatile space with a creative atmosphere in every room.
