Super Control, Hollywood MSR Studios, New York


SUPER CONTROL recording studios is a full-service recording studio in North Hollywood, built within an acoustically designed space at the renowned Bill’s Place rehearsal studios. It offers a mix of contemporary recording technology and vintage gear, and can accommodate most needs, from production, writing, arranging, editing, tracking and mixing. Super Control was set up by a trio of musicians – Paul Ludemann, Brian Siegel and Kris Haavig – in order to provide engineering and production services to fellow independent artists. Its staff is comprised entirely of working musicians with bands of their own and the studio promises not only an understanding of what it’s like to be on the other side of the control room glass, but also a very friendly, creative and relaxing environment The facility was intended from the beginning to satisfy the demand from independent artists to be able to work with an engineer and producer who could ensure high-quality recordings at an affordable cost and, more importantly, be creatively invested in their projects. The studio’s rates are designed to within the reach of be musicians on a budget and prices are


therefore very reasonable as standard, however, the studio is very flexible and will do what it can to work to a specific monetary figure.


Co-owner Paul Ludemann explains that the idea for Super Control came following a bad experience with an under-qualified engineer at a recording session: “The engineer didn’t know what he was doing. At one point he said: ‘I wish I went to school for this’. I thought, I’m paying you and you mention that? I’ve found that a lot of engineers, more often than I thought, weren’t really artists or musicians or creative minds. I figured there’s a need for artists, especially indie artists, to be able to communicate with the engineer. That was our goal when starting the studio, and why I got involved as an engineer.”


By way of explanation, he continues with an example: “There’re two new groups, Sleep For Now and Bullet Made Statues, that I’m mixing. They like to come in and we talk conceptually. I work to connect with their idea, the art behind the music and establish trust. If I understand their concepts and we’re really communicating, I can do more for them than they can imagine or would even know to ask for.”

MSR STUDIOS is the largest full service recording facility in New York City. Located at 168 West 48th street in the heart of midtown Manhattan, it is a three-room, large format tracking and mixing facility that has been the site of numerous Grammy- winning, platinum, and gold certified recordings, in addition to major motion picture scores and Broadway cast recordings. The studio is notable for its Hip Hop clients – it has attracted numerous Rap record labels, such as Def Jam, G-Unit, Bad Boy Entertainment and Interscope, among others. MSR benefits from experienced management, technical and support staff, including chief engineer Bradshaw Leigh.


MSR consists of studios A, B and C. Studio A is MSR Studios' largest tracking room and, at 1,800 square feet, there aren’t many acts that it can’t accomodate. Here, musicians will find an array of acoustic, electric and electronic instruments, among them a Korg Triton Pro, Yamaha Conservatory Grand and DW drumset. Empty handed guitarists might find themselves a little


out of luck, but if they’re prepared enough to have brought their own axe, there are a number of amplifiers to complete the rig.


In the attached 420 square- foot control room (Studio C), aside from the very special SSL J series,


complemented by 24 Neve 1081 mic pre/eq modules, engineers are


treated to a custom Augsperger main monitoring system with custom Leigh Audio Design dual 18-inch subwoofers. Conversion and synchronisation is top-notch, with names such as Rosetti and Aardvark and two Studer A827 two-inch tape machines. All engineers will appreciate the extensive collection of vintage mics. Studio B is MSR's digital mixing/tracking room. It is based around a Euphonix System 5 console with EuCon software allowing for DAW control. The System 5's ability to handle high track counts on a small footprint make studio B a great room for film score and Broadway cast album mixes and the 800 square-foot live room can comfortably accommodate any small tracking session.


This year, MSR’s facility and staff were involved in the making of 17 recordings that were nominated for Grammy Awards in 12 categories.
