Brenton Fyfield Grampians Classics in Wartook Valley Festival


Key Achievements


• Continued to maintain high numbers of building permits issued


• Hosting of a successful footings seminar highlighting the difficulties in dealing with local soil conditions and impending regulatory changes


• Employed a Building Assets & Maintenance Officer (B.A.M.O.) to assist with the development of Council’s asset management and building maintenance programs


• Improved staff amenities with the construction of a new Staff Room


• Created two new offices catering for up to 6 staff members in the Environmental Health and Corporate Services departments


• Redeveloped and significantly improved the Building Department offices to allow room for the new B.A.M.O. and the provision of a separate offices for the Building Surveyor and the Planning and Promotions Manager’s executive assistant


• The implementation of an electronic building inspection system to streamline and improve customer service


Challenges


• To continue to take advantage of funding available for Council capital works projects from the Federal Government’s Regional Infrastructure Fund program


• The ongoing development and implementation of Council’s asset management program for buildings and the meeting of timelines for same


• Implementation of defined actions as outlined in Council’s Environmental Sustainability Strategy Action Plan


Promotions Department


Horsham Rural City Council’s Promotions Department is committed to supporting tourism within the municipality and recognises the value of events and festivals to the region. Marketing sponsorship is available from Council’s Tourism Advisory Committee, funding sponsorship is to assist with the marketing of events and festivals applications are called twice yearly.


The Promotions Department recognises that major events can provide an economic injection into the community by increasing visitation to the region and increasing awareness of the region.

Promotions Website Behind the scenes, the Promotions Department co-ordinated a new design and layout website www.visithorsham.com.au or www.visitwartookvalley.com.au Both these sites are regularly updated to keep the visitor informed of the latest activities within the region.


Support


Significant event support was provided to hosting of events including Australia Day celebrations, the new Grampians Classics in Wartook Valley Festival, along with the Australian Cricketer’s Association ACA Masters Tour, proudly supported by Horsham Rural City Council.


Steering of the refurbishment of the Horsham and Grampians Visitor Information Centre, co-ordinating the new layout design and arranging promotional and visual displays that captures the essences of the region.


Arapiles Bike Trail


When completed, the Natimuk – Mt Arapiles Bike Trail will be a 26 kilometre off road recreational bicycle trail linking Natimuk to Mt Arapiles and taking in some of the natural features of the area such as Natimuk Creek and salt and freshwater lakes. Works are happening in a staged manner with the first stage from Natimuk to Mt Arapiles via Natimuk Creek, Gladigau Road and Arapiles Lane nearing completion in 2010.


With Councils assistance, the Natimuk Bicycle Project Team was successful in being able to secure $112,734 for the trail from the Federal Government Jobs Fund; $222,000 from the Victorian Governments Small Towns Development Fund; and $51,600 from the Macpherson Smith Community Alliance. Horsham Rural City Council has also committed $100,000 to the project over a three year period.
