Cargo gateways bounce back from downturn news


AIRPORTS Council International (ACI) has released its World Airport Traffic Report for 2009, which provides an analytical review of traffic data for over 1,350 airports that are members of theworldwide association. ACIWorld director Angela Gittens said the

cargo industry had suffered a substantial loss during2009,withcargovolumes fallingby7.9 percent – adding to the drop of 3.7 percent seen in 2008. In a year that saw worldwide aircraft movements decline by 5.1 percent, as


operators cut back on capacity, domestic cargo accounted for 37 percentof total cargovolume–downby 6percent comparedwith theprevious year; international cargo, comprising63percentof the total, sawa 9.5 percent drop. Gittens noted that “against the background of the worst global


recessionsincetheSecondWorldWar”cargotonnagefell, reflecting thedirect impactonglobalmarkets andproductivity feltduringthe severe economic downturn.


She commented:“The vertiginous drops in freight traffic seen in


thefirstmonthsof theyearprovideda clear signofglobaleconomic stress. The reversal of that downward spiral later in the year could notmake up for such steep losses.” As the main hub of global integrator FedEx, Memphis


International airport remains thebusiestdomestic cargohubinthe worldwith just under 3.7million tonnes processed in 2009. With nearly 3.4million tonnes handled in the year, Hong Kong


remains in the lead position for international freight processed, followedby SouthKorea’s IncheonInternational airport.AmongACI members, Guangzhou achieved the biggest rise during the year, with a 39 percent increase to 955,270 tonnes. TheMiddle Eastwas the only region to enjoy an overall growth


in its cargo traffic, achieving a 4.3 percent rise to over 5.1million tonnes. Dubai led the expansion in the region, leaping up the ACI rankings intermsof international cargo,withover1.9milliontonnes of cargo handled during the year. The UAE gateway was also the only top ten-ranked airport to


grow its cargo volumes in 2009, with throughput improving by 6 percent.
