Recognising the importance of punctuality and
guaranteed delivery in the fashion logistics sector, the DHL Calendar showcases a range of haute couture
garments made from the packaging materials usually used to transport them. The collection was created by German designer Michael Michalsky (pictured centre).
Keeping pace with
T
he growth of so-called ‘fast fashion’, the rapid stocking by retailers of the latest fashion items, often based on clothes and other luxury products associated with celebrities, is one area pushing air cargo growth in the fashion sector.
The expansion of fashion product sales in developing markets, such as China and other Asia Pacific region countries, is another area of development. There is also the urge to reduce inventory levels and associated costs, thereby creating a demand for fast replenishment of stock when sales surge. Working against those positive factors for the air freight
industry are the ever-greater competitive and cost pressures on fashion retailers and their suppliers, forcing them to continually seek cheaper transportation options such as moving goods by ocean freight or by the dual-mode sea-air option wherever possible.

Many of the major trends in global fashion industry retailing are helping to drive a growing demand for air freight services to move products around the world. Phillip Hastings finds out more
In common with other worldwide
industries, most of the fashion business felt the impact of the global economic recession in 2008/09 and the volume of products moved by air reflected that. However, like a number of other air cargo commodities, the fashion business has subsequently seen a strong recovery. “Fashion industry air cargo traffic was
hit as badly as every other sector by the recession, in fact maybe a bit more. It was also a little slower to recover than the high- tech sector, for example, simply because the latter had a lot of new product launches which stimulated that market,” commented John Cheetham, the Hong Kong-based regional commercial manager Asia Pacific
Cheetham: “fashion sector air freight traffic has now recovered up to pre-crisis levels”
