Globelink China arrives in Manchester

RUSSIAN carrier Polet Airlines celebrated the inauguration of its first IL-96-400T freighter service between MoscowandMunich, via Shanghai, on 9 September. Freight forwarders, cargo agents


and media representatives joined a teamfromMunich airport towelcome the 90-ton payload aircraft on the inaugural operation at the southern Germany gateway. Anatoly Karpov, general director of


Polet Airlines, said at the ceremony in Munich that the launch represents “a new page in our transportation services”. Polet confirmed that it is going to fly


the large Il-96-400T freighter at a twice-weekly frequency on a Shanghai


Pudong - Munich - Moscow Shere- metyevo routeing. It will also fly twice a week on a


Pudong - Liège - Moscow routeing, once aweekMunich - Sheremetyevo - Pudong and once a week on a Liège - Moscow - Pudong routeing. The carrier is aiming to add


additional frequencies to the operation later this year, while it also intends to start offering flights out of Beijing at the end of October.  The IL-96-400T is a cargo version of the IL-96-300 passenger aircraft, stretched by 9.35 metres. Polet describes it as having increased fuel capacity, and being equipped with new turbofan engines and improved avionics.


More space on Schiphol - Shanghai link


MARTINAIR is now offering an extra twice-weekly B747-400ERF (Extended Range Freighter) service between Amsterdam Airport Schiphol and Shanghai Pudong. Freight on the flights consists


predominantly of general cargo such as telecommunications equipment. With these two additional services, Martinair Cargo and Air France-KLM

Cargo now operate a total of 31 freighter or combi flights aweek from their twin hubs of Amsterdam and Paris Charles de Gaulle to Shanghai. Remarking on the motivation for


the new services, the carrier group said: “AF-KL Cargo andMartinair Cargo focuses on capacity discipline and very selective, flexible growth opportunities in line with demand.”


CBI Global Freight Management, noted: “The acquisition of our company by one of the world’s foremost logistics companies will not only ensurewe can continue to maintain our growth in the Far East (but) also worldwide due to Globelink China’s extensive agency network.” He added: “Make no mistake,


Manchester has been chosen over LondonbyGlobelinkbecauseof the unrivalled logistical opportunities afforded byManchester airport.” The city is expected to act as the


UK headquarters for the new enterprise, with CBI Global Freight Management rebranding to Uni Logistics – a subsidiary of Globelink China Logistics. Noting the value of previous co-


operation that has taken place betweenthe twocompanies, Sleigh commented:“Theimpactof thisdeal cannot be exaggerated. “The purchasing power and


contacts of Globelink provided during our strategic partnership of 2009havealreadyseenourbusiness grow110 percent,”he pointed out.  Manchester airport handled the A380 aircraft for the first time earlier this year, when Emirates Airline began a service to its Dubai hub on 1 September. This was the first time that the


world’s largest commercial airliner hadoperatedascheduledserviceto aUK regional airport.
