Toronto-Pearson welcomes Beijing links
CANADA’S Toronto-Pearson airport is experiencing a “bounce-back” after the difficulties of 2009, according to Perry Cloete, manager air services business development for cargo at Greater Toronto Airport Authority (GTAA). At the end of the first quarter of this
year, the airportwelcomed non-stop three times a week B777-300ER (Extended
Range) services operated by Taiwan’s EVA Air, between Toronto and Taipei. Also this year, FedEx increased its domestic fleet in Canada, replacing B727s with B757s. And the new additions keep coming –
at the end of November, China’s Hainan Airlineswill inaugurate three times aweek A340 flights linking Toronto-Pearson with Beijing, providing “much-needed inbound lift from Asia” for imports including electronics and garments. Cloete commented: “Our air exports to
China have risen substantially – up by about 36 percent year-on-year, and include auto parts andmachinery.” One of Toronto’s selling points is its
incentive programme which includes reduced cargo landing fees, he noted.
