Lufthansa Cargo invests in new cool chain technology

IN BRIEF

GEORGIA-basedWorld Airways has agreed a deal with Jade Cargo to operate a B747-400F on a full-time basis for the Shenzhen-based joint venture carrier fromthis month (October). Subject to government approval, the intention is for the aircraft to link Shanghai and Yantai with Chicago three times a week. The freighter will then continue toAmsterdam, before returning to Shanghai.

MALAYSIAAirlines enjoyed a 3.9million ringgit (US$1.25 million) operating profit over the course of the first half of this year. During the second quarter, revenue fromfreight operations rose particularly markedly, by 74 percent year- on-year to 538million ringgits ($171million). Yield during the threemonths rose by 21 percent year-on-year, but high fuel costs led to an operating loss for the airline in the quarter.

ANEWfreight forwarder network, named Conqueror, has recently been established inMadrid, Spain. The objective of the network, says founderAntonio Torres, is to mobilise the top rank of independents to work together as another ‘mega-forwarder’ while at the same time keeping their independence.

LUFTHANSA Cargo has shown off the latest addition to its equipment stable, a cold-chain container it calls the opticooler. The carriermaintains that it “combines innovative technology with optimum reliability and maximum transport quality”. Opticoolers use compressors, rather

than dry ice. This means they require only electricity towork andcanbeused for shipments thatmust not come into contactwiththecarbondioxideusedin dry ice containers. The opticooler temperature of

records the container throughout the journey, with that data

then being available to customers should they require it. It isalsoaconsiderableadvantagefor

the cargo carrier, given the testing documentation procedures now required by shipping regulations. Developed in conjunction with

the

German manufacturer Dokasch, Lufthansa Cargo board member product and sales Andreas Otto said that theopticoolerhasbeentailored“to suit individual customer requirements. In that way,” he added, “we guarantee fast and flexible service paired with topmost safety and reliability. “Businesswithtemperature-sensitive

freight has grown strongly in defiance even of the global economic crisis in 2009.We aimto continue that growth trendandincreaseourmarket share. We have for that very reason invested in newtechnologies.” Opticooler finished its testing

programme in August, and the container is now ready for use right across the Lufthansa network.
