The agency has created emergency stockpiles of non-food aid items in Copenhagen and Dubai to supplement local aid supplies in areas of need. It has established long-standing agreements with freight forwarders and logistics companies and developed a global network of suppliers, specialist agencies and partners. All that is needed when the urgent plea for help comes is
the air freight capacity to move these supplies as rapidly as possible to where they are needed the most.
ON-THE-GROUND DISTRIBUTION Within hours of the first call for help from Pakistan, London-based broker Air Charter Service (ACS) had arranged a cargo-carrying AN-12 carrying supplies from Spain into Islamabad, and the ACS office in Dubai had arranged 90 tonnes of shelter kits on a B777F departing from the Middle Eastern hub. With a long experience of humanitarian response,
ACS works as the official air charter provider for the British Government Department For International Development (DFID). Richard Thompson, senior account manager ACS
London, commented: “The same day that I received the phone call confirming that they needed the charter I had the aircraft positioned into the departure airport and ready for loading. The aircraft left the following day after the cargo had been loaded and arrived into Islamabad after the long flight in the early hours.
