Midland Power launches new website
This month sees the launch of Midland Power Machinery Distributors’ new website, which incorporates several changes resulting from customer feedback. An enhanced search facility enables customers to find items by either entering a keyword, as well as by manufacturer name or Midland Power part number. Regular on-line promotions will also be announced on the site. A download centre enables visitors to obtain machinery parts lists, warranty forms and technical bulletins, and there are now no carriage charges for on-line transactions. There is also no minimum order level, with orders below a nett value of £30 incurring a £3.95 administration fee. Visit the site at

HSS unveils apprenticeship scheme
HSS has introduced a technical apprenticeship scheme to offer young people a practical post-
school option, as well as training new fitters and technical engineers. Offered at the hirer’s Supercentre locations around the country, students will complete a fully funded three-year Advanced Apprenticeship that includes mentored on-the-job training, as well as residential study sessions, culminating in NVQ Levels 2 and 3 in Plant Maintenance. Head of HR at HSS, Annie Hale, said, “For the past 12 months, we have offered an
apprenticeship scheme as part of our Hire Alliance consortium in East London (at the Olympics site). We are now going to run something similar throughout the wider HSS business. Apprentices will benefit from working alongside our experienced team of fitters and they will attend formal study sessions in order to gain a professional qualification. “If successful, we will guarantee them a permanent position with HSS at the end of their apprenticeships,” she commented.
Active opts for JCB
Active Plant Hire, based in Upminster, Essex, has increased its fleet with the addition of four new JCB mini excavators. The order comprised two zero tailswing 3 tonne 8025s, an 8 tonne 8085 zero tailswing model, and a 14 tonne JZ140 reduced tail swing machine. “More customers have been asking us for machines that are
environmentally friendly,” said Active’s Sales Director Mark Scutt, pictured (centre) with MD Jerry O’Donovan (left) and Operations Director John Deeble. “The main advantage of these excavators is their fuel efficiency, which reduces customers’ operating costs as well as lowering emissions. “We have recently won a significant new contract because the client was impressed by the low emission levels of the engines. We are also planning to add 5 tonne JCB minis to our fleet in the near future.”
