Suppliers have also focused attention on the environmental qualities of smaller lighting products, such as those used indoors by plasterers, painters and decorators, and other tradesmen. “It has been a long education process getting people to change their product selection habits,” says Mark Richards, Financial Director of The Hire Supply Company (HSC). “Some national hirers have been quick to see the benefits and have added products like our low-wattage festoon lamps, fluorescent lights and task lights to their catalogues. This awareness will filter through to other hirers, especially as there definitely seems to be more work being undertaken generally now.”

Energy-saving LED lights make attractive point-of-hire retail items for additional revenue opportunities.

Chris Mellor-Dolman, Head of Marketing with Birchwood Price Tools, reports “we had a very good season last year following the launch of our low-energy lighting products using LED technology. We have also introduced new point-of-sale packaging that will make items such as floor lights and hand-held lamps very attractive for hirers to offer for retail. This represents a revenue opportunity that more hire companies are realising. And as well as using less energy, the equipment incorporates recyclable components, giving another environmental benefit.”

Turning attention to heating products for hire, suppliers not surprisingly experienced strong demand during the severe conditions last winter. Chris Mellor-Dolman says that “we virtually

needs,” and this is echoed by HSC’s Mark Richards, who recalls that “many hirers who had virtually stopped spending towards the end of last year, realised they had to replenish stocks of equipment like our Elite heating products. Suppliers like ourselves are able to meet this sudden demand quickly, so that hirers can meet fulfil customer requirements.”

Nevertheless, as Dave Matthews, Director of Climate Hire & Sales, points out, not all heating equipment markets are quite so influenced by extreme weather conditions. “The vast majority of the Arcotherm indirect fired heaters that we supply will be hired out regardless of whether the ambient temperature is plus 10°C or minus 10°C, particularly for requirements such as heating temporary structures. These are used not only in the events and entertainments markets: they are also in demand for applications such as temporary retail facilities while shops that are being refurbished need to remain open, and for extra features like seasonal shopping displays.

“The demand for this kind of heating equipment is less reactive than, say, the need for evaporative coolers during heatwaves or for heaters fuelled by bottled gas to heat offices and other premises quickly during cold snaps.”

There are, therefore, many opportunities in the heating and lighting markets. With the right equipment, and backed by the ready product availability that suppliers strive to provide, hirers can derive full benefit from them.
