LESSON 11: HOW TO BUY ART
Buying your own original piece of art can be a fantastic experience, and gives you something really unique and remarkable to enjoy for years and years.
BUY SOMETHING YOU LOVE
Buying original art for your home can be really exciting. There’s no point in buying something because you think it’ll be the next big thing, if you’re going to have it on your living room wall for the next 20 years, you really have to love it.
The Buy Art Fair in Manchester is a great place to start thinking about buying, or even investing in art, with lots of artists to choose from and plenty of advice at hand.
This year’s Buy Art Fair will be held at Spinningfields from October 28-31, and will feature work from more than 300 artists and more than 60 contemporary galleries from all over the UK. Running alongside Buy Art Fair is ‘The Manchester Contemporary’ which provides a selection of cutting edge contemporary artists, curated by Manchester-based gallery ‘The International 3’.
So what do you need to think about before you look for your perfect piece of art work? The Buy Art Fair’s show director John Dare talks WorkLife readers through his top five tips.
DO YOUR RESEARCH This piece of advice is the same for spending a considerable amount of money on anything. Don’t buy the first thing you see - make sure you really research what’s out there and whether it’s worth the money. The Buy Art Fair is a perfect place because you can browse and talk to several different galleries and their artists as well as have the chance to listen to the experience of two of the UK’s leading collectors, Richard Greer and Robert Devereux. You can then mull over your decision with a spot of lunch at Spinningfields!
BUYING ART FOR YOUR BUSINESS Installing original art in your office could energise your staff and impress visitors, as well as helping with brand image and being a great PR story.
Arts & Business’ Visual programme can help you with your decision having put together a portfolio of 1,500 artists. They can help you choose the work that’s right for your business. Find out more at

CONSIDER INSURANCE As with any important purchase, you should consider taking out insurance for your new piece of art.
This year’s Buy Art Fair is sponsored by Bluefin Insurance Services in conjunction with AXA Art Insurance, who specialise in providing carefully designed solutions for individual pieces through to large collections.
Their team of experts will be on-hand throughout the fair to offer guidance on choosing the right level of cover.
AND FINALLY, THE MONEY Always make sure you can afford the art work and that you discuss the price with the gallery owner. Also make sure you know what is included in the price, and whether there are extras such as framing, delivery or VAT.
Arts Council England runs the ‘Own Art’ scheme, which means you can borrow up to £2,000 to buy your artwork, and pay it back in 10 monthly instalments, interest free. Find out more at
