The song ‘Distant Friend’ which is being used in the film ‘Freight’ is quite special to me and the first song I wrote; I was 16 years old.
I was 19 years old when a producer ‘GLOX’ took me into the studio to record and produced the track properly.
What has been the most successful moment in your career as an artist so far?
Oh definitely my track being used in the film ‘Freight’, I’m quite overwhelmed and excited that it has been chosen.
However the best gig I have done so far in my career was definitely when I was asked to sing for a boxers’ charity event and I sang in front of Roberto Duran, Ricky Hatton and Jo Egan. Jo Egan also starts in the film ‘Freight’ - it’s a small world!
Tell us about the soundtrack - how did it happen? Dave Gowinlock who produced the track is just so very talented; his music was heard and ‘noticed’ by the right people - luckily my original ‘Distant Friend’ track was one we worked on together and he re-produced it with his music along me singing my original lyrics and from here it was picked for the film.
How do you feel about the Graham Park ‘House’ remix? I’m so excited I’ve not heard it yet; he is a great DJ, a legend I think! I’m sure it will be an amazing remix.
How would you describe your style?
I have tried my hand at many styles of music whilst finding my feet in the genres that I enjoy best and those that I feel suit my voice particularly well. To be honest I still enjoy mixing up music styles but I particularly love singing Jazz. I have already recorded a soulful rock album and at the moment I am working on a number of songs for my new album which is specifically ‘House’ music. I’m really enjoying making my current album; singing and writing my new style of ‘House’ music!
How have you found the transition from singer to songwriter? I don't feel there has really been a transition; I am still very much both a singer and songwriter who enjoy singing my own songs as well as covers. I just feel I have been very lucky to have had one of my own songs recognised and used this year for the new British film ‘Freight’; released in USA but due for UK release this October. It’s especially exciting that I hear the film has been receiving such fabulous reviews both from the public and the film industry itself both in Mexico and the USA.
Do you have any advice for budding artists? Just stick at it if it's what you love. Be your own person and don’t try and sound like anyone else. Just go for it!
What’s next for Mirren?
I’m working on my new ‘House’ album which I’m really excited about. I’ve got a lot of hard work ahead to promote myself and the new album. I am also looking into setting up my own entertainment company in the future, however, my music is definitely going to come first.
Mirren also mentioned that “Music has always been my hobby not my career so far” - Well, it looks like things are about to change and we can’t wait for the new house dance album due out in Autumn 2010!
it was always a bit of a secret fantasy and dream to be a singer until I was about 16 when I left school
