“For example, someone may have lost their phone or changed their number and if you’re sending important information it may end up in the wrong hands, potentially proving detrimental to your business. Most phones aren’t password sensitive and this means anyone can access information.
“If none of the before mentioned forms of communication are available and texting is the only option then it is important from a business perspective to make sure you don’t use colloquial language. For example, using ‘text talk’ looks highly unprofessional and could mean the message is not understood.
“Social texting to friends and so forth should be strictly prohibited during working hours as it can prove a huge distraction and can affect productivity.
“It is important for businesses to outline a strict policy on mobile phone usage in the workplace and anyone in breach of this should be disciplined accordingly.”
On a more socially acceptable note, Jo Bryant from Debrett’s top tips for texting the news:
1) Text messages are ideal for conveying a message instantly and quickly - but think about the tone of your text message and try to avoid sounding too abrupt.
2) Remember that not ever one is familiar with abbreviated ‘text language’ - it is important to make yourself clearly understood.
3) Utilise the space/number of characters available. The usual salutations and sign offs can be ignored if you know the recipient.
4) Double-check that you’ve included all the important information and have chosen the correct recipient before you hit send.
5) Try to avoid sending or reading non- urgent text messages when you are out in company.
6) As with ring tones, choose your text alert tone with care - a short bleep will suffice.
