Coker points out that Hong Kong Disneyland Resort’s shareholder, The Walt Disney Company, “is in negotiation with the Shanghai Government for the development of a Disneyland in Shanghai.” For the future, Coker offers various observations as to
what this might hold for the Asia/Far East theme park and leisure/tourism industry. “The steady economic growth in Asia, especially in
China, is expected to continue to boost the number of leisure travellers, as well as their per capita spending in the region. According to the latest World Tourism Organisation research (April 2010), China has overtaken France to take the fourth position in the ranking of international tourism spending in 2009. The report pointed out that Chinese expenditure on international tourism has grown the fastest in the last decade, increasing by 21 per cent in 2009. “The organisation also forecasts that by 2020, the
number of Chinese travelling abroad to all nations is set to double to 100 million a year, making China the No. 4 source of tourists to the world after Germany, Japan and the United States.
“This exponential growth will continue to draw the
interest of domestic and international theme park leaders, leading to a variety of diverse offerings.”
