Association news Malaysian Association of Amusement, Themepark & Family Attractions -MAATFA
MAATFA was formed for the purpose of promoting the orderly development and conduct of the business of family entertainment centres (FECs) and to represent the common interests of its members in dealing with government agencies, local authorities, organisations, companies and individuals on matters relating to FEC operations in the country. The association was first formed in October 2001 as the
Malaysian Association of Family Entertainment Centres (MAFEC) in accordance with the Registration of Organisations Act 1966. In 2003, it was renamed the Persatuan Taman Thema & Pusat Hiburan Keluarga Malaysia, or the Malaysian Association of Amusement, Themepark & Family Attractions, in line with growing membership numbers and their type of operation, which includes outdoor theme parks, waterparks, wildlife parks and amusement parks.
MAATFA aims to:
■ Provide a forum for the discussion of issues relating to FEC operation
■ Represent the members collectively in matters relating to FEC operations in Malaysia
■ Enable members to act jointly on matters of common interest and to represent members in communications with other bodies and the public
■ Encourage every aspect of FEC operation in Malaysia in order to raise standards and enhance the quality of FECs in the country
■ Support the development of FEC facilities in Malaysia
■ Encourage the development and promotion of family entertainment machines and software in Malaysia
■Maintain and foster trade ethics and fair business practices among members
This year the association is involved in the organisation
of the Asian Attractions Expo 2010, run by the International Association of Amusement Parks and Attractions (IAAPA), in which a Malaysian Pavillion has been created for MAATFA supplier members to exhibit in. The event will take place from July 13 to 16, at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre (KLCC), in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. The association’s contribution to this event will help to
enhance the local amusement and theme park industry in Malaysia and assist it to prosper, while local businesses will enjoy improved opportunities both locally and from abroad. The association intends to continue to ensure that its
members prosper and obtain the necessary assistance to make sure they are successful. MAATFA currently has approximately 40 members, consisting of theme park resorts, amusement parks, FECs, suppliers to the industry, etc., and is fully committed to obtaining new members. It regularly plans events and activities to enable members to promote their products and expand their business as a whole. While MAATFA continues to work hard on these issues,
it is also striving to bring the association closer to the government. By improving its rapport with the government, MAATFA is seeking assistance on issues such as tax exemption, licensing, import and export matters for gaming machines, government assistance for all the association’s events and activities and other industry related matters. The association also works closely with the Tourism
Ministry of Malaysia to ensure that all events and activities contribute towards the country’s tourism growth. The amusement and theme park industry is a major contributor to local tourism and it is hoped that the association and its members will play a vital role for tourism to progress further. The Malaysian Association of Amusement, Themepark
and Family Attractions has set out to ensure that its contribution towards the members and Malaysia will grow and enhance the amusement and theme park industry to bring further success.
