The Asian theme park and attractions industry has promised much for many years and in more recent times has begun to show some of its true potential as developers seek new opportunities outside the more traditional, mature, markets of the US and Europe. With increased development, new
openings and some of the bigger players moving into this part of the world, Asia has become a key area for the theme park and attractions industry. As we look forward to the Asian Amusement Expo in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, in mid-July, we discuss the market with a number of industry experts
Shawn McCoy, vice-president, marketing and business development, Jack Rouse Associates, US “The leisure/tourism industry in Asia and the Far East has started to fulfil some of its anticipated growth potential over the past few years, as a variety of major theme parks and cultural facilities have come on line and have been operating with degrees of success. “While the markets in this region are still in various
stages of growth, I think that the business relationships between Western suppliers (i.e. designers, consultants, hardware providers) and Asian clients have started to mature and become more efficient. This can be attributed to the willingness of both groups to modify their traditional approaches in order to become more collaborative.” Regarding the current global economic situation, McCoy
notes that, like all large capital projects, this has resulted in a variety of projects either being delayed or, in some
