Cook Islands get an Aussie link The Cook Islands Government has approved a financial guarantee to enable an Air New Zealand B767 direct flight servicing Sydney-Rarotonga-Sydney to operate for a trial period until October. The new route augments current routings via Los Angeles, Auckland and Tahiti. Fifteen South Pacific islands make up the Cook Islands.

brands consortium, WORLDHOTELS, has signed an agreement with Othon Hotels of Brazil for five new affiliate hotels in Rio de Janeiro, Salvador and Belo Horizonte. Othon has a five-brand portfolio of 26 properties with 2,000 guestrooms in Brazil, Portugal and the United States.

A date with the Southern Spirit
BY ALAN ORBELL Rail Australia alliance partner Great Southern Rail is now selling the new touring series of The Southern Spirit for 2011, following its inaugural run earlier this year. Since releasing the departure dates for travel in January/ February, the operators of The Ghan and Indian Pacific have released additional dates to meet the demand for this new South Eastern Australia rail touring experience “It’s great news that the 2011 tour
series has been so well received by the travelling public” says Dave Atherton, business development manager for the
UK. “We have just released two more dates, now giving us six travel dates from late January to early March with 24 booking options”. The Southern Spirit has been
improved for 2011, offering a six-day rail tour from Adelaide and five days from Melbourne to Brisbane and vice versa. Included in the overall price, (from Aud$3,900), are all meals in the Queen Adelaide Restaurant on board the train, all accommodation on train (choice of Gold or Platinum Service), and daily whistle stop tours as well as a travel compendium and commemorative pen. With a whistle stop tour each day,
guests are able to use the train as their travelling base and then go and tour the diverse Australian landscape such as, The Grampians, upper Murray River, The Hunter Valley (lunch off train is included) and Byron Bay (with a free day to explore this seaside resort). Connections can also be made with
