Back in 1990 long- haul holidays were starting to become

more attainable. Marketing itself under the tagline ‘Instant Asia’, Singapore was working hard to promote itself as a cultural heritage destination, with investment going into areas like Chinatown and Clarke Quay, with numerous traditional shophouses reopening as restaurants and craft shops. A ‘Rediscover Singapore’ promotion in March of that year attracted more than 600 guests from the UK travel trade. Malaysia was also on a

marketing drive – 1990 was decreed Visit Malaysia year, which saw international arrivals rise from 4.85m in 1989 to 7.45m within just 12 months (today’s figure is over 20m, but this was still a huge increase). The tourist board spent its efforts in promoting five areas: Kuala Lumpur (where the Petronas Towers were still eight years from being completed), Borneo, Pangkor, Penang and Langkawi. In 1990, Kuoni offered a seven-

night stay at the Rasa Sayang Resort, Penang, including flights and transfers, from £855pp. 1990 was also the year Royal

and 12.5 million visitors this year, which translates as between 20 and 30 per cent growth year on year. We’ve just had our seventh consecutive month of record visitor arrivals, so we’re feeling bullish. Within that, UK figures are showing single-digit growth, but we’re still happy about that, particularly given the dramas around the volcano and the BA strikes. We hosted a fam trip for 80 UK agents in May and we’ll be looking to do something similar in the early stages of next year.”

CHRIS ROBLES DIRECTOR OF MARKETING BRUNEI TOURIST BOARD “Brunei is a little-known, tasteful, friendly and exotic destination that will appeal to seasoned travellers, families and nature lovers in general. Minutes away from the capital, bands of frolicking Borneo

endemic proboscis monkeys can be spotted by the riverbank. Further afield, the pristine expanses of tropical rainforests can be easily and safely explored in short day trips, or overnight at comfortable lodges or resorts for a stronger experience. Lively day and night markets, a good array of accommodation, dining and shopping experiences and traffic jam free roads make the capital enjoyable."
