Virgin Gaming operation has teamed up with Ubisoft. It’s the latest publisher to sign for the initiative supporting online tournaments played with its games.

The first confirmed Ubisoft game to use the service will be Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon: Future Soldier – but multiple Ubisoft games will use it, the firms say. Virgin Gaming was unveiled at E3. It is a competitive gaming specialist that rewards players of multiplayer games with cash prizes.

“Ubisoft is one of the leading video game publishers in the world and we are thrilled to offer our members the opportunity to compete in some of their best multiplayer console games,” said Rob Segal, CEO of Virgin Gaming. “Virgin Gaming is a unique convergence of social networking, video games and competitive gaming, and we are excited that Ubisoft shares our vision for the platform and its potential.”

UK SOFTWARE SALES MONITOR

Your weekly guide to the UK games software market…

 At last there’s some good news for UK retail, with the games market rising 20 per cent this week to £16.8 million. The number of units sold also rose, up 15 per cent to 801,876.

 There were two main reasons for the rise. First was the eagerly anticipated PC release of StarCraft II, which launched at retail last week and took No.1 in the All Formats Top 40. The second was a series of attractive promotions on the High Street, with the likes of Modern Warfare 2and Left 4 Dead 2reduced in price.

 The beginning of August is a quiet time for retail, with just a handful of family titles on the release schedule. So expect sales to be relatively slow for the next few weeks.

This could be enormous.” Ubisoft is just one in ‘a slate of industry partnerships with key publishers and retailers’ and Virgin says it will confirm more soon. It’s thought EA, Microsoft and Sony are already on board; some of their key multiplayer games, across 360 and PS3, are already listed on virgingaming.com.
