This year’s Tacoma Yacht Club

Summer Vashon race went off without a hitch. At the start we had minimal wind and maximum current, which made for a challenging start. Most of the boats were on the correct side of the line and fighting to stay there before the start - the challenge was not to get pushed over by the current. A couple of boats misjudged the timing and had to fight to get back. Once the race got off, the fleet headed

towards Colvos pass. As the wind started to fill from the south, the shoots came out and the fleets started to separate. This year the Race Committee put a rounding mark at Olala to act as a choke point in case we needed to shorten course, luckily we didn’t need to. I’ll bet the folks on the beach enjoyed watching the boats round that close to shore.

As the wind kept filling in from

the south, the committee moved to the north end of the Island. We found the shallow spot north of the ferry landing and set the turning mark. To prevent any mishaps with the mark, reminiscent of the Winter Vashon, the mark was held in place with enough ground tackle to stop whoever got too close. So, with the RC boat standing by snapping photos everyone rounded without incident. Once around the mark they were off for the long beat down the east pass to the finish. Meanwhile, the Cruising classes

sailed a shorter course to the Olala buoy and back to the red buoy just inside Quartermaster Harbor then to the finish. For them, the wind got light as they came back towards the narrows. The current wasn’t much of an issue by then but it
