“Action” in

the Saratoga Passage Here are some “action” shots of the rigorous and

hazardous Saratoga Passage on July 5th, in 7 knots of wind, middle of the day, calm. Notice the singlehanding of S/V Svensk Flicka. It was obviously too rough for a spinnaker (might spill the beer), and poling out that 18-foot spin pole is always interesting. Note that in the last pic (there were three) the beer is still unspilled! Oh wait, it was the night of July 4th that was blustery. Too bad I was too busy sailing that night to take pics.

Thanks for the great read during my hours-long transit

of those treacherous waters. I really was trying to take action shots.

Another Silly Publicity Stunt Gone Very Wrong

Bravo! Thanks for your excellent editorial regarding the foolish exploits of Abby Sunderland. When I read that some teenager was in distress single-handing across the Southern Indian Ocean in mid-winter, I thought it had to be a misprint. Alas, no, it was another silly publicity stunt gone very wrong.

I have a tiny bit of experience in that ocean, thankfully not in a small sailboat. In 1997 I was part of an expedition team that traveled from Reunion I. (21°S, 55°E) to Heard Island (53°S, 73°E) and back. Also, in 2005, I was part of another team that crossed the entire Southern Indian Ocean from west to east, Durban, South Africa (30°S, 31°E) to Kerguelen Is. (49°S, 70°E) to Fremantle, Australia (32°S, 116° E). There are two properties of this ocean that I’ll never

MARINE ENGINE SALES AND SERVICE

Support local and regional programs for children and young adults through the charitable donation of your boat. The Pacific Marine foundation is a 501(c) (3) non-profit organization funding regional programs such as Northwest Youth Services, Sea Scouts, Boys & Girls Clubs, and local public school education foundations. A substantial tax savings and the possibility of a partial cash sale makes a charitable donation a very attractive alternative for any owner who is considering selling their power or sailing yacht.
