Letters Fundraising for Coast Guard Families

It is my sad duty to report to you that the Coast Guard Foundation has announced a fundraising drive for its emergency Family Disaster Relief Fund in response to the Coast Guard MH-60T Jayhawk helicopter crash off the coast of La Push, Washington July 7, that claimed the lives of three servicemen. This fund provides immediate assistance to the families of the fallen crew members as they deal with this tragedy. The Coast Guard Foundation is also seeking support for the Fallen Heroes Scholarship Fund, which provides college scholarships for the children of Coast Guard members who perish in the line of duty. Six children lost their fathers in this tragedy and the Foundation will provide support to each one to assist with higher education expenses.

As always, if you would like additional information on the Coast Guard Foundation or its continued support of Coast Guard members and their families, please let me know and I would be happy to help.

Best,

Townsend around 1973. The yard was Skookum Marine, the architect was Ed Monk Sr. The boat is fiberglass, 47 feet on deck, 6-1/2’ draft, 13’2” beam. I believe that the hull shape was designed by Ed Sr. to be a longline fisher and was made in wood. Then a mold was made from a completed wood hull and the glass boats began. We are looking to speak with people who knew of this

boat, Mr. Monk, or worked at the yard, or who might have knowledge of the Coast Guard agency that apparently did some inspections during the building. Thank you, Doug and Anne Siddens now in Oriental, NC sv_drakus@yahoo.com

No doubt you’ll get some info from folks in the NW about the Skookum 47. Checking the web, there is a discussion at www.cruisersforum.com and you’ll find some specifications from the S/V Homespun at: www.sill-enterprises.net/homespun/
