LESSONS AND

CLINICS

Free lessons and

clinics are offered at both Poppy Hills and Poppy Ridge member facilities Wednesday

The goal is to let as little grass as possible get between the club and the ball.

evenings and Saturday afternoons through Labor Day. (Poppy Ridge also has a Friday evening option.) Keep an eye on the Member Advantage page on ncga.org as free group lessons are also presented at nearly all of the more than 80 Member Advantage facilities. Contact the course for time and topic.

Situation No.2

The ball will travel from right to left (for left-handers), so aim about 15 yards right of the target area when the ball is below your feet.

You’ve blasted a drive off the 10th tee at Poppy Hills and it’s in the rough on the left side of the fairway, on the side of a large mound. This is going to make your layup shot diffi cult. Here is your checklist for this shot:

✓ Check your lie. If the ball is

really sitting down you will have to be more conservative in your club selection. Remember, you are in the rough so don’t compound the mistake by trying to be aggressive on your layup. Just get it back in the fairway by using a lofted club with your normal swing tempo.

✓ Check your stance. In this

instance, I have an extreme sidehill lie, with the ball below my feet. As a left-handed player, I need to adjust my setup to account for the ball fl ight this sidehill lie will produce. I know the ball will travel from right to left, so I will aim about 15 yards right of my target area.

✓ Check your setup. The ball is at

least six inches below my feet. To ac- count for this, I will bend my knees signifi cantly more than normal. I will keep my knees bent through the shot to promote solid contact.

Follow this checklist when you end up in the rough, and hitting out of the long stuff will become second nature.
