Illegal drop Rule 20-2 tells us how

We commonly see a person pick their ball up from a cart path or ground under repair and toss it in the direction of the fairway and play it.

to drop. The player must stand erect, hold the ball at shoulder height and arm’s length and drop it. Golfers will commonly spin the ball when dropping or even drop with their arms too high or too low. When a ball is dropped

improperly it is a one-stroke penalty. When a player not only drops improperly but also in the wrong place, it is a loss of hole in match play or a total of three penalty strokes in stroke play.

Is that my ball? A very common rules

violation occurs when a player picks the ball up for the purpose of identifying it and fails to follow the prescribed procedure. Rule 12-2 describes the correct action. Before doing anything else,

the player must tell either the opponent or fellow-compet- itor about lifting the ball for the purposes of identification. This can happen at any time, including when the ball lies in a hazard. Second, the player must

mark it before lifting the ball. Third, the ball cannot be

cleaned. However, it may be cleaned just enough to iden- tify it. If the ball is the player’s

and there is a failure to follow any or all of these procedures, the player is penalized one stroke. If the player fails to put the ball back where it was picked up, the total penalty is two strokes.

The player must also give the opponent or fellow-competitor the opportunity to watch the marking, lifting and replacing.
