lege students and golf tourists, get a sugar fix at the Fisher & Don- aldson bakery on Church Street (try the yum-yums), get lost in the handful of golf merchandise shops for hours buying souvenirs (start at Auchterlonies, 50 yards away from the 18th green on The Old Course), or settle in for a stellar meal at places like the Russell Hotel (behind the 18th green and up the Scores road), The Doll’s House on Church Street, or Balaka on Alexandra Place (for excellent Indian food). Fresh seafood is a sta- ple of the Russell; order the salmon and finish off the meal with Sticky Toffee Pudding dessert. Just outside of town are The Grange Inn and other golf course clubhouses, like the Duke’s Course or Fairmont St. Andrews, both with wonderful views of the St. Andrews skyline.

Golf addicts and historians should

check out the British Golf Museum located across the street from the Old Course, or head to the southern end of town to visit the graves of Old and Young Tom Morris, the local father and son duo who captured eight Opens overall between 1861 and 1872. You can even test your putting skills on the Himalayas, an 18-hole course adjacent to the second hole. Or you can become a spectator at the first tee, watching others begin their journey around the Old Course, confidently knowing what awaits them or silently wishing them the same good golfing fortune you hope for yourself.
