Ocean. It is at this moment at the top of the hill when you know you are in for something special. The defense of the course is the

wind, the undulations (leaving very few fl at lies) and the gorse. To score well one must think their way around the layout. The brilliance of the design is the different playing options; the par-3 fi fth hole is one such example. The green slopes from front to back and rolls from side to side; golfers could play the same putt on opposite direc- tions of the hole due to the exaggerated undulations and angles. In true Doak style, the course seems

as if the land was left untouched and the design team only added fl agsticks and bunkers. The twists and turns come into play at every corner because the course is meant to be played on the ground due to the ever-present wind. The biggest challenge is to stra-

tegically place the ball in the correct quadrants of the fairways and greens to

allow for angles to attack the fl ags. A golfer could conceivably hit every fairway and most greens in regulation but not score well because putts of 200 feet (not a typo) are not uncommon. Old Mac has the largest putting surfaces in the world at an average of 14,600 square feet which is three times the size of standard greens. Even sideways hitters won’t be

looking for their tee shots (if you can’t hit fairways and greens here, take up tennis) or hacking out of the rough on Old Mac as Keiser wanted this layout to appeal to higher handicappers, or “retail golfers” as he calls them. A few blind approach shots exist on the back but the majority of the layout is right in front of you. Old Mac may not have the cliff-

hugging fairways of Bandon Dunes, the postcard-worthy par 3s of Pacifi c Dunes or the shotmaking diffi culty of Bandon Trails, but it has more character, requires more creativity and is the most playable design of the group.
