JOHN FEINSTEIN’S talent for bringing out the game’s lesser-known heroes continues in Moment of Glory, a look at the major champion- ships in 2003. The author’s fi ne eye for detail examines the life-changing moments that occur in a blink of an eye when a golfer captures a major. The year Feinstein examines saw Mike Weir, Jim Furyk, Ben Curtis and Shaun Micheel capture ma- jor titles and endure the upheaval that dramatically affected all four golfers.
DAVID FEHERTY’S hilarious rants from the pages of Golf Magazine are archived in The Power of Positive Idiocy. The author’s acerbic wit is on full display with no one exempt from the CBS commentator’s sharp tongue. Par- ticularly funny are the mail bags, where Feherty responds to reader questions in a manner that often must be read twice before you fi nd yourself laughing.
And for instruction, take a look at LAIRD SMALL’S Play Golf the Pebble Beach Way. The director of the Pebble Beach Golf Academy and frequent leader of NCGA Foundation clinics demonstrates every shot needed in a round at Pebble Beach, a set of skills applicable to any course in the region. Superbly illustrated, the book aims to save you fi ve strokes without changing your swing.

is blessed with one that has drawn rave reviews. CLEAR CREEK TAHOE (above) is a Ben Crenshaw and Bill Coore design near South Lake Tahoe in a beautiful natural setting that, true to the designers’ usual approach, required minimal earth movement. The golf course, which is part of a larger residen- tial community laid out over 1,600 acres, only required 55 acres of turf, much less a standard course due to the architects’ approach. The third hole is especially memorable, taking the golfer from the highest point on the property to the lowest in just one hole. The course is certain to enhance the architect’s portfolio, already one of the best considering their work at the highly- regarded Sand Hills GC in Nebraska and Bandon Trails in Oregon. Other notable new designs opening
nationally include TPC San Antonio, Pete Dye and Greg Norman’s new work in the Texas Hill Country already the host of the Texas Valero Open and Nebraska’s Prairie Club, a sprawling multi-course facility featuring tracks by Tom Lehman, Graham Marsh and the Horse Course, a 10-hole layout where players match shots, much like the basketball game of “Horse.”
