the ocean to the right of the fi rst two holes at Ban- don Trails.

Without a fancy spa or

outside attraction, Bandon is golf to all people. Every conversation overheard on the shuttle or in the restaurant is about a shot played or a recent golf trip. Visitors share a passion for the game and escape to Oregon to only think about golf.

ELEMENTS The resort is perched

on sand dunes more than 100 feet above the Pacifi c Ocean overlooking undisturbed shoreline that extends for more than 20 miles. The courses wind through bluffs, forest and gorse and like the North- ern Californian coast it can be cold and windy during the summer months. The incomparable views are often met with high winds and precipitation that make playing at Bandon so challenging. No matter the time of

year wind and rain will play a role in your experi- ence. Most golfers are not keen to play in cold and windy weather on their home courses, but a little precipitation is only fi tting

on the Oregon coast. The fescue fairways are tighter than the grass California golfers are ac- customed to and absorb inclement weather well— fairways/greens rarely if ever collect standing water. Very few courses in

the U.S. allow golfers to hit waist-high short irons or putt from the fairways. Bandon not only allows that, it demands that type of shotmaking and creativity to score well.

GOLFERS ONLY Bandon Dunes is the

place you go to fall in love again; not with your spouse or partner but with the game of golf. Only at Bandon would

golfers think about getting in another round after 36 or even head to the fabulous par-three course adjacent to the driving range after a full day. The walking-only resort at- tracts passionate golfers (not necessarily skilled ones) who rarely stop at 18 holes a day. The summer nights and quick pace al- low for a morning round, an afternoon round and however many holes one can fi nish at night. Shorty’s is the nine-

hole par-three course designed by McLay Kidd. It is not uncommon to see groups playing the holes with bottles of wine

CADDIE/WALKING EXPERIENCE

Caddies are said to be a colorful lot and the group at Bandon Dunes doesn’t disappoint. If you choose, the same caddies can stay

with your group through- out your stay. The full-time loopers are helpful in navi- gating the course swales, determining the prevailing winds, crafting lively sto- ries and helping golfers last longer as they carry your clubs and extra golf balls all day. As a helpful side, the pro shops act as ATMs so guests can charge the caddie fee and tip on their credit cards and walk away with the appropriate cash for the day.
