Graeme McDowell captured the 110th U.S. Open Championship in mid-June in a battle that seemingly no one wanted to win. In doing so, McDowell became the fi rst Northern Irishman to win the U.S. Open, the fi rst European in 40 years (Tony Jacklin in 1970 was the last) and only the third since 1925.


The champion started


the fi nal round three-under and three back of third- round leader Dustin Johnson who stood at six-under-par for the championship. And the players chasing the leader included the world’s best two golf- ers—Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson—and two-time Open champ Ernie Els. The tournament’s theme song became “Staying Alive,” pro- ducing a fi nal round devoid of memorable shots but full of calamities. By the eighth hole, McDowell had taken a three-shot lead over the fi eld and then held on for the win, despite only making two birdies over the last 34 holes of competition.
