FEATURE THE BIG INTERVIEW

Environmental issues are an area where we tend to seriously overestimate the speed of change but massively underestimate the impact

the parking industry attracts. He thinks the BPA and other key players should be leading the way in changing public perceptions. ‘Unfortunately at the moment parking is judged

on the number of tickets issued or by the bad press associated with the clampers. We need to quickly consign the clampers to the dustbin and we need to show clearly that from a local authority point of view parking revenue goes back into the transport system.’

Using a range of suppliers, Liberty Services runs 76 car parks throughout the UK

The need for green thinking Reddin urges the BPA to take the ethical and moral high ground on environmental issues. ‘Tis is an area where we seriously overestimate

the speed of change but underestimate the impact. It is like the advent of unleaded petrol. It was an idea bandied around for years and no one thought it would get anywhere, but suddenly almost every car ran on unleaded fuel. ‘Parking has a unique responsibility. It is an

industry that is at the heart of negative environmental issues because it is all about cars. Te BPA should be

encouraging members to become carbon neutral, or at least look at ways of reducing energy usage.’ Tis is not just hot air from the chairman. Liberty

Services has signed up to a carbon reduction programme, and the measures it is putting in place are set to save £20,000 a year in electricity bills and make the company carbon neutral by 2013. Reddin has a strongly-held belief that will win him

no friends among motorists. ‘Te London congestion charge works brilliantly.

Every city should have a congestion charge and there should be road charging everywhere.’ Te team at Liberty Services have identified

environmental issues as a major factor in future developments, and one to which they believe every company will need to pay more than lip service. And it is by identifying trends in the market

that Liberty Services has become such a success. Recognising that small gaps can pay big dividends has given the firm a market niche, and a longevity that perhaps even Alan Reddin did not expect when he invested his army pay into a print firm back in 1945.
