BPA FOCUS REGIONAL ROUND-UP

NORTH EAST
Craig Mordue Head of parking services – Newcastle City Council
I am 41 years old and have worked for Newcastle City
Council for more than 20 years, working mainly in an engineering environment, including traffi c management and road safety. I am a chartered engineer and have been a member of the Chartered Institute of Highways and Transportation (CIHT) for the past 10 years. I fi rst moved into parking during 2005, when I managed the parking infrastructure team and helped develop life-care plans for the city’s nine multi- storey car parks.
I was also responsible for managing the more technical aspects of parking to help ensure an effective and compliant service. During 2008 I managed a number of workstreams to support the implementation of civil parking enforcement, which was introduced during April 2009. In December 2009 I succeeded Neil Cuthbert as head of parking services.
Neil has developed some quality services within the authority and as a result I am also responsible for the council’s corporate travel offi ce. This includes sustainability issues such as the bike to work scheme, car leasing scheme, staff parking, pool cars and other public transport initiatives.
I was also appointed as regional chair of the North East BPA. I hope that the group continues to explore, embrace and implement new technology in a profession that has come to the forefront in recent years.
In a time of economic downturn it is
important for local authorities to provide a quality service to meet residents’ needs and support the commercial viability of town centres. It is also important for the group to understand and tackle environmental issues such as climate change and carbon emissions. This can only be achieved by better awareness of government initiatives and innovation.
Terry New Sales director – Cobalt Telephone Technologies
Terry New is sales director for Cobalt Telephone Technologies, where his responsibilities involve business development for the RingGo product, generating new business, adding value to the
RingGo brand and promoting new services and products within the public sector.
New has been involved in the
parking sector for six years and is well-qualifi ed to comment on the developments taking place in the sector. He said: ‘It’s exciting times as parking enters the digital age. Being a technology-led company, Cobalt is fi nding many new opportunities to pursue and develop in and around the parking arena. ‘Given the current economic
climate, we see parking going through signifi cant change in the coming years, as local
authorities and private parking operators look for much greater levels of effi ciency, without huge increases in expenditure. ‘New technology will be one of the ways in which this can be achieved and our core business, providing automated services, meets favorably with many of the key objectives coming out of the sector. ‘The impact of climate change

on motoring and the environment also brings new challenges. We see a coming together of a much wider audience than currently, with environmentalists, planners, policy makers and politicians all interested in how we can use parking as a strategic tool to change motorists’ behaviour, through services like carbon-metered parking.’
