PRESIDENTIAL PIECE

AS THE PRESIDENTIAL YEAR DRAWS TO A CLOSE, RICHARD HEIN REFLECTS ON A BUSY 12 MONTHS

goodbyeAnd it’s from him…

but work commitments and time constraints made this an impossible task. So what were my highlights from the year? Recently I became the fi rst BPA President to

W

attend the Scottish BPA group meeting. I met Fiona Reid from Perth and Kinross and Gordon Catchlove of the City of Edinburgh, along with Patrick Troy, the evening before and attended the meeting the next day. T is was a very positive group and reminded me that many of our BPA colleagues do not work within civil parking enforcement (CPE) and have other experiences to share. We must also ensure inclusion of parking

operators from the Home Countries so that the BPA is not seen to be an English parking association. As part of our 40th anniversary celebrations 19

former presidents joined me, my successor Graham Brown, the following year’s president Paul Necus, and Patrick Troy for a dinner in London. T is was funded entirely by the attendees

themselves and it was fantastic to meet up with some of the legends of the parking industry. I would hope that, as a legacy, this may now become an annual event with even more attendees in the future. Here are my highlights of a busy year:

● President’s speech on the terrace at the House of

Commons – what an honour! ● T e Parking Summit ● Member’s Dinner (Was Steve Davis’s performance at the recent World Snooker Championship inspired

by attending our dinner?) ● Parkex and the Gala Dinner – this was the best

attendance for a long time for a stand-alone event ● T e launch of the Hospital Charter

22 JULY 2010

● Meeting public fi gures such as Sadiq Khan ● Attending regional group meetings and meeting the people who are trying to make a diff erence and

raise standards ● T e past presidents’ dinner in London However – and this may sound a bit odd –

A GREAT GROUP OF INDIVIDUALS ARE STRIVING TO SERVE THE BPA MEMBERSHIP AND IMPROVE THE PARKING SECTOR

my biggest highlight has been chairing Council meetings, where a great group of individuals are striving to serve the BPA membership and improve the parking sector. It is always a little stressful as the chair, making

sure everyone has their turn to contribute to the meeting, and maintaining a level of control through what can be some passionate debate. Finally, I must off er my sincere congratulations

to Anjna Patel on her recent success in being voted in as the new BPA vice president, and off er commiserations to Barry Nelms. I have known Barry for many years from our Croydon days; I’m sure he will be back again in next year’s vote. Anyway, that’s enough from me. All I can say is

that it has been an honour and a year I will always look back on with fond memories. Many thanks to the BPA Council, the Presidential

team, Jane Hack, Patrick Troy and Kelvin Reynolds, and the rest of the team at Haywards Heath. Enjoy your year, Graham, and try to keep it in your memory!

ell, that was my year. People told me that it would fl y by, and it certainly did. It would have been great to attend all the meetings I was invited to,

Saying his farewells… outgoing President Richard Hein has enjoyed his year
