The Triflex Group specialises in a range of solutions for car parks, roofs, walkways, balconies, terraces, road markings and other projects. Paul Barker, Triflex’s technical director, said that in the early 1990s it ‘led the

industry by introducing a range of waterproofing and surfacing systems for car parks, based on the Creative Car Parks concept.’ These focused on structural protection; security and safety; and for the first time in the industry – aesthetic enhancement with a virtually unlimited colour range.
The company developed a niche in providing solutions for very busy car parks (shopping centres and supermarkets) or high-risk structures such as rooftop car parks over occupied premises. As many of these car parks featured failed asphalt and Triflex had proven compatibility, asphalt overlay developed as a Triflex speciality. Mastic asphalt has been used for many years for car park waterproofing and surfacing. According to Barker asphalt can demonstrate numerous failures over its’ lifetime such as opening of day joints; blistering; slumping of upstands; and cracking. These defects can allow water into the structure, which can track under the unbonded asphalt layer, rendering the source of water penetration difficult to identify.
Asphalt can also suffer from wheel indentations and wear/loss of crimp. Wheel indentations can result in ponding, which creates a health and safety risk, particularly when water freezes, and

high profile sites like the {London 2012} Olympics’. ‘People are desperate and some are prepared to work for suicidal rates.’ Suppliers and contractors are concerned about
the commercial pressures, but they are also acutely aware of the structural ones, which constantly affect car parks.

cathodic protection system. When cars drive into a multi-storey car park (MSCP) they often bring in de-icing salts from the roads. Tese salts cause the rapid development of extensive rebar corrosion, which reduces both the carrying capacity and lifespan of the MSCP. According to Vince Ryan at Quadriga, the extent
of visible and hidden damage to car parks has varied tremendously. After the damage has been repaired and the rebars controlled, the CZ system is installed as a 7mm thick coating. Te application of the CZ system, which uses a combination of the conductive wearing course and the Camur digital remote monitoring system, will, according to Quadriga, enable complete corrosion control for the MSCP. Ryan said: ‘It also offers the additional benefits of preventing water leakages and reducing general
