“The French Road King” by artist Partick Charuel
I had a customer come to me wanting his “Harley Davidson Road King” repainted; it was black when he bought it and he wanted it to look like “The Harley Davidson Screamin Eagle Electra Glide” which is a limited edition. The first goal was to change the customer’s mind and direct him to something similar but not a copy. He finally decided to go
with a metallic colour instead of opaque as on the original, and change the classical flames to ghost flames. The last thing was to make an eagle head on the front fender and keep a temperate look to the full bike. The bike is new and just has 100 Kilometers on the speedometer!
All of the pieces have been sanded with 600 grit wet sand- paper to opaque the clear. I had to work a lot on the parts where there was striping and on the tank logo. Each colour of the tank logo was under a clear coat and I had sand to the first coat.
Because of the logos and striping I’ve decided to spray a primer over those parts to be sure to get a perfect surface and avoid logos and strips coming back under the base coat. After drying time, the primer has been sanded with 500 grit dry paper.
After applying a degreaser I spray a Fine Silver solvent base coat over the all the parts I’m to paint. After drying I mask the parts which will stay this base colour. The borders are outlined with 3M tape, the inside part is masked with transfer paper to avoid over spray. Then I put some 3M scotch over the transfer paper because this paper is not solvent resistant.
With all the grey parts masked I spray two coats of Coarse Sliver base coat. The goal is to increase the difference of reflectivity between the grey and yellow parts as well as the texture contrast. This is followed by two coats of trans- parent base mixed 25% with yellow ink.
