Once I’m happy with the design all done with single tape I go back and add two more pieces of fine line tape side by side. The middle one I’ll actually be pulling out and this will be our seam in the metal plates. This technique is a no hassle way of keeping the width of the seam constant thru out the design.
With the design outlined now in two pieces of tape I go back and cut all the intersecting parts out so it ends up looking as this picture. This will be our seam which we’ll add color to in the next step.
I make the seam just a little big as I like to pull a darker line down the center and fade it out from there. Here I’m using a gravity feed air- brush ( Sata 3) at maybe ten psi, for color I’m using KK Root Beer mixed with a little Oriental Blue and a touch of black.
Just to make the design a bit more in- teresting I’m going to add a hole where some wires can be seen inside the hel- met. The first step is to use two-inch masking tape to mask the area off, draw out our hole.
Basically all I’m going to do to add these wires is spray a single color line across our opening in the masking, wait for it to dry and cover it with fine line tape. Apply a different color and again wait for it to dry, cover it. Dif- ferent size wires can be produced using different size fine line tape. I’m working on three different openings in this design so it goes pretty quickly as when I finish the third I can start the next step back at the first opening. Pictured here you can see I’ve decided that one of the opening will be an entire plate in the back of the helmet.
With all the wires in place and covered with our fine line tape I use black for the one and only time in this design. Black is so over powering that in most cases it will take away from your design by becoming a point for the viewer to focus on, in this instance that’s good as we want to draw peoples attention to these areas.
