Mini-game sequel heads to Wii following the wave of success of THQ’s 2008 original… by Dominic Sacco

THQ SAW huge success in 2008 with Big Beach Sports – a collection of fun summer activities well suited to the sand, including volleyball and cricket. The game sold over 800,000 units in the UK alone, making it a surprise casual third party hit on Wii. Now the publisher is confident the sequel will perform just as well. “We are really pleased to be launching the sequel to Big Beach Sports this summer,” says THQ’s associate PR manager Rebecca Attard.

“

“The original is the fourth highest- selling third party Wii title of all time, with more than 815,000 units sold.” “Big Beach Sports 2 is hitting the market a few weeks before the kids’

summer holidays begin, offering great fun for all the family with both single player and multiplayer games. “There are plenty of great beach sports to compete in, including dune buggy racing, surfing using the balance board, and beach football.”

It’s the third in THQ’s ‘Big’ franchise series following last year’s Big Family Games, and follows a similar bright colour scheme with simplistic controls to ensure the title has real pick-up-and- play appeal.

Big Beach Sports 2 also adds five entirely new sporting activities for

players to experience, including canoeing, water rocket, dune buggy races and surfing. The latter is even compatible with the Wii Balance Board and allows players to ride waves with a full-body surfing stance.

”

Other favourites from the original return such as football, cricket, and frisbee golf. Up to four players can participate in the game by using the Wii remote to swing, throw, bowl, row or shoot their way to victory with a range of characters and locations.

The title is set on the volcanic island of Moa Loa where athletes from around the world congregate to compete in the ‘Coconut Cup Championship’. The overall winner is crowned ‘king of the beach’.

Players have the option to customise the look of their character and create a

personalised team jersey for everyone to wear alongside them.

THE SPORT OF CASUAL

Casual games have found a home on the Wii, with a range of titles proving immensely popular with both younger players and families alike. Similar games such as Wii Sports, Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Winter Games and Sports Island have all performed well at retail, putting Big Beach Sports 2 in good stead for sales success. Like its predecessor, Big Beach Sports

2 arrives with a budget price tag of £19.99, making the title very accessible in order to drive through maximum sales. THQ also has a wealth of experience in the casual Wii games sector with its All Star Cheerleader, All Star Karate, Bratz and Battle of the Bands games. Big Beach Sports 2 will be released for Wii on June 18th.
