our members and the economic well being of our region.”

KIERAN MAC SWEENEY, Consulting

Partner of the Discovery Partnership and former MD and Senior Vice President of Avocent International, has been elected the new President of Limerick Chamber. Mr Mac Sweeney formally took over the reins from outgoing President Harry Fehily in March. “These are certainly very worrying times for anyone in business and the focus must now be on finding the solutions not on the problems,” Mac Sweeney said speaking about his priorities for the year ahead “Now more than ever the business community in this region needs a strong voice to ensure its views are properly represented. The priorities and strategic direction of the Chamber will represent what is in the best interests for the business community,

“There is a clear need for better government focus on supporting SMEs. Growing small companies will be essential to generating wealth and jobs in this country in the next few years and the Chamber intends to drive and support initiatives aimed at that sector including increased funding from our banks. Government policy must at all costs support the productive, tax generating sectors of this economy as they seek to cut costs, sustain employment, survive and position themselves for the upturn when it eventually comes.”

Mac Sweeney is currently Consulting Partner with The Discovery Partnership (www. thediscoverypartnership.com) where he advises and works in close partnership with owners and executives of small- and medium-sized companies to facilitate change, to help them expand into new markets, help them develop strategic business plans, trouble-shooting problems, developing staff, team building, acquisitions and integrations and helping them realise the true potential that exists individually and within their teams and their organisations. He is a native of Limerick city, is married to Annette, has a daughter Michelle who is working in Genworth in Shannon, and a son Stephen who is a student in LIT.

Outer bypass crucial for Galway business

GALWAY CHAMBER, with its partner organisations IBEC West, Irish Hotels Federation West, the American Chamber West and the Information Technology Association, Galway, has lobbied strongly for many years on the N6 Galway City Outer Bypass. “We believe that the Galway City Outer Bypass is an integral part of the newly opened, and very welcome, M6 motorway from Dublin to Galway,” said Michael Coyle, Chamber Chief Executive. “By stopping on the approach to Galway city, the M6 forces traffic into Galway city regardless of their destination, be it Connemara or the western suburbs of the city. We urge Government to support the earliest possible intervention by the European Commission in resolving the current legal issues pertaining to the Galway City Outer

Bypass,” he said. “We have consistently stressed the importance of the Galway City Outer Bypass as a fundamental part of the overall traffic and transportation management of Galway and its hinterland, both currently and into the future including the development of Galway Harbour and Ceannt Station.”

The Chamber have also stated that the urgency of the Galway City Outer Bypass is of paramount for tourism in the Connemara region and have pledged to continue to work with both Galway City Council and Galway County Council, and project managers on the project. “This is a vital piece of infrastructure for Galway and the West and we strongly urge our elected representatives to support us in progressing this project,” said Coyle.

FINGAL DUBLIN CHAMBER has launched

a new Business Network Group to help business men and women meet, learn, connect, network and grow their businesses with like-minded business people. The first network group met in the Crowne Plaza Northwood recently and is the first of many such business network groups planned over the coming months.

“The first meeting was very encouraging with a large and cross sector group of business women and men meeting to share their knowledge and business contacts with each other. It was invigorating to see so much enthusiasm among the attendees,” said Chamber President, Andrew O’Neill. Each Chamber business network group will meet in a different venue and will have its own membership. Chamber members will register as a member with one network group but will be able to attend the other groups as well. The maximum number of members in each group will not exceed thirty. Non-Chamber members can join a network group but must become a member of the Chamber within two months of joining the Group.“Business network groups should be a natural part of a chamber’s work as they provide a valuable service for chamber members and create new opportunities to grow chamber membership.” said Tony Lambert, Chief Executive of the Fingal Dublin Chamber.
