COMMERCIAL PROFILE
In addition, the centre has prioritised heavy investment in the latest technology, ensuring that Dublin can compete with other world-class venues. For example, all of the halls and meeting spaces are Wi-Fi enabled, which will allow up to 2,000 delegates to access the internet simultaneously in our auditorium. The most advanced audio-visual equipment and lighting systems have been incorporated to enhance any event. The building technology enables us to operate an intelligent building, which will interface directly with our event management system.
stations and local bus routes making it easy to reach the rest of Ireland. Dublin’s Port Tunnel means that The CCD is now only 20 minutes from Dublin Airport. The Airport now offers direct flights from over 200 destinations worldwide. Later this year, we will see increased capacity at Dublin Airport thanks to the opening of Terminal Two. All of these new improvements underpin Dublin’s future as an attractive business centre.

DESIGNS FOR LIFE
The CCD was designed by Ireland’s most acclaimed international architect, Kevin Roche. Kevin has won innumerable awards for the design of over 300 major buildings around the world. In 1982, he was awarded the prestigious Pritzker Prize, which is the Nobel Prize equivalent for architecture. Kevin’s better known work includes the New York Metropolitan Museum of Art, The Oakland Museum, the UN Plaza and the Ford Foundation headquarters in New York. The CCD is the first Irish building he has designed to date. It has been extraordinary for all of the team to have had the opportunity to collaborate with Kevin over the last decade in bringing The CCD to fruition. Kevin, a master architect with incredible attention to detail, has designed every facet of the building right down to the door handles. The CCD design is end-user driven and has emerged as an iconic building on the banks of the River Liffey. It has a wonderful 55-metre high glass atrium offering guests amazing views right across the Dublin skyline and over the Dublin and Wicklow mountains. Environmental sustainability concerns have been central to the design and the future operational regimen for the facility. The CCD is the world’s first carbon neutral convention centre. During construction, the contractors used materials with minimal environmental impacts such as Ecocem reduced- carbon cement and timber from renewable forests. The management team are committed to sustainable business practices over the long term. For example, using renewable energy suppliers and installing the latest technology to monitor and reduce overall energy consumption. The waste management policy for operations has a target of over 75 per cent of waste recycling.
ON THE MOVE
In most retail-related business there are three main drivers for success – location, location, and location. This, plus great transport links, are also crucial prerequisites for a successful international convention centre. For this reason, Dublin’s Spencer Dock is a perfect location for The CCD. It is close to the capital’s many hotel, cafes, bars, restaurants, theatres, sporting venues and major visitor attractions. New infrastructure, such as the Calatrava- designed Beckett Bridge, now allows quick access to and from the southside of the city. The CCD is also served by a new Luas station as part of the city’s Luas tramline extension, which links directly to Heuston and Connolly train
THE FUTURE LOOKS BRIGHT
We’ve been delighted with the pre-opening success in securing events. So far, we have over 50 contracted bookings including a number of prestigious conferences such as The International Bar Association with 4,500 delegates, The International Statistics Institute with 3,000 delegates, The International Conference of Emergency Medicine with 2,000 delegates and The 6th Congress of European Crohn’s and Colitis Organisation with 2,000 delegates, as well as a number of corporate board meetings and sales conferences. On the banqueting side, we are also thrilled to be hosting this years’ Dublin Chamber Dinner in October and the Irish Hospitality Institute Founders’ Banquet and Hospitality Awards event in November. So far, confirmed events will account for about 250,000 delegate days. This translates to an approximate e75m boost for the economy, based on a typical delegate spend of e1,400 per visit. In addition, we have over 200 other events which have taken options for dates through to 2021. With consideration to major job losses at present, The CCD is going to have a positive impact on the local economy. In the construction phase, up to 750 people were directly employed on site plus hundreds more in off-site fabrication. There will be about 250 permanent employees working at The CCD and that number will increase by up to 500 more part-time workers servicing larger events. In addition, as many of the delegates will be international, the local businesses, such as taxis, hotels, bars, restaurants, shops and tourist attractions, will also benefit directly and immediately from the opening of The CCD. 2010 is a banner year of celebration for Ireland and Dublin with many of the long-awaited national infrastructure projects coming to fruition including motorways, Luas extension, the Samuel Beckett Bridge, Aviva Stadium, Terminal 2 at Dublin Airport, the Daniel Libeskind designed Grand Canal Theatre and Kevin Roche’s Convention Centre Dublin. The CCD is a truly symbolic 21st century state-owned building proudly joining the Custom House and the Four Courts on the Liffey. As the first major public access building constructed in Dublin since the foundation of the state, The CCD is fit-for-purpose, fit for place and fit for posterity. Personally, it has been a privilege to shepherd The CCD project through planning, design, construction and what is now the operation phase. It has the potential to be a first-rate national venue where we, the Irish, as hosts, will put our best foot forward to greet the world. Please let our team welcome you there soon.
Dermod Dwyer, Chairman, The Convention Centre Dublin.
