Cultural heritage joins the battle to boost footfall in Waterford

++++++++++++++++++++++++++

An exciting new tourism initiative being launched by Waterford City Council, Waterford Chamber and city centre hoteliers should help boost tourism and city centre footfall this year

++++++++++++++++++++++++++

ALL VISITORS TO the city who are resident in one of the city’s 12 hotels will receive access to Waterford Museum of Treasures and a tour of Christchurch Cathedral at heavily discounted rates. This landmark voucher scheme will ensure last minute bookings for city centre hotels and will also ensure all visitors to Waterford city learn about the unique heritage that has made this city so great.

“We were conscious that the city centre will require much needed footfall this year and what better way to create this than to drive tourists through the heart of the city,” says Michael Garland, Chief Executive of Waterford Chamber. “The voucher will encourage visitors to travel through the spine of the city

centre by visiting the Museum of Treasures and Christchurch Cathedral. These visitors will literally travel through the retail heart of the city to get to and from these venues. We are creating a much needed awareness of Waterford’s rich historical past and we are also creating a readymade market for the city centre retailers. The potential for generating additional bed nights is really limitless. With all 12 city centre hotels actively promoting this initiative we have potentially a massive sales force all selling Waterford City as a destination. This initiative will, I hope, boost not only the hotel trade but the retail trade as well.”

In addition to all hotels committing to promoting the voucher scheme, all the hotels

have agreed to train their key staff members about the voucher and what exactly it has to offer. There will be additional training for key hotel staff, as they will be able to visit both the Museum of Treasurers and Christchurch Cathedral and familiarise themselves with the product offer.

wholly committed to a long-term working relationship with our fellow Chamber in San Francisco for the benefit of the business community in both cities.”

“We welcome the chance to work together with our colleagues at Cork Chamber as we continue to develop opportunities

that will benefit both Chambers and both cities, says Steve Falk, President and CEO of San Francisco Chamber of Commerce. “As we continue to struggle with economic uncertainties, this agreement will help open doors to enhance business activities and trade.”

The agreement was signed as part of a three-day trade development visit to Cork’s sister city, San Francisco by a delegation which includes the Chief Executive of Cork Chamber Conor Healy, Lord Mayor of Cork Cllr Dara Murphy, and the President of UCC Dr Michael Murphy. During the visit delegates met with San Francisco city officials as well as representatives from IDA Ireland, Enterprise Ireland and a number of leading US businesses based in San Francisco such as Apple, Cypress Semiconductor and McAfee who have existing operations in Cork.
