IN SEPTEMBER 1997 Richard Barrett and John Ronan, owners of Treasury Holdings, invited me to head up a team in an attempt to win what was then the 1998 Bord Fáilte-sponsored tender for the provision of a National Conference Centre in Dublin. At that time, Treasury Holdings together with Harry Crosbie were entering into a development agreement with CIE to develop a 52-acre regeneration site located beside the Irish Financial Services Centre (IFSC). 13 years and three tender processes later, we are finally about to deliver on that foresight and vision.
INVESTING IN THE FUTURE
The international downturn in both business and leisure tourism has hit Ireland particularly hard. Now is the perfect time for Ireland’s first purpose- built national convention centre to open and help to kick-start an upturn. For the first time, Dublin and Ireland can compete with other leading European capital destinations for the lucrative business tourism market. This market is targeted to be worth an estimated e1 billion to Ireland by 2013, based on research from Fáilte Ireland. It will act as a catalyst to attract new business and boost the local economy. Up until recently, Ireland did not have a

purpose-designed facility and though successful in attracting international conferences and events, we tended to be a market taker rather than market maker.
TAKING CENTRE STAGE
The Convention Centre Dublin (The CCD) is a state-of-the-art conference venue located in the heart of Dublin city. A multi-functional facility with a capacity from eight to 8,000, the centre provides 22 purpose-built, boardroom-standard meeting rooms. This includes 4,500 square metres of exhibition space, banqueting facilities for up to 2,000 guests, as well as on-site car parking. The centre is perfect for annual conferences, award ceremonies, board
meetings, training sessions, product launches, Christmas parties, press launches or any event, big or small. Also on offer is a 2,000-seat auditorium with a full theatrical stage. This will be used to host plenary sessions and keynote speeches during conferences, but it can also accommodate concerts and public entertainment events; offering a chance for the general public to experience this exciting new building.
