FEATURE NEW PAYMENT SOLUTIONS

A variety of payment options.

Verrus, which successfully rolled out the scheme at 55 Moto service stations last October. Meanwhile Verrus’s PayByPhone service has proved

popular in the London Borough of Islington, where a trial of the service took place across 2,000 parking spaces in part of the borough in December 2008. Introduced as an alternative way of paying, with no

pay-and-display machines being removed, the service saw more than 50 per cent adoption within just nine months. With the financial squeeze, some suppliers maintain

that local authorities should consider adopting new technology to drive efficiencies.

Pushing the boundaries

Bruce Gardner, IT Director at NSL Services Group, said: ‘Tough the traditional parking technology supply chain is ‘innovation light,’ the benefit of strategic partnerships means we can push the boundaries with its suppliers, and pilot technology with early adopting local authorities. Once proven, we’ll always look to share that knowledge with all the contracts we serve.’ He added: ‘Our experience in the Gulf means that

new technology being tested there could be used in the future in the UK parking industry. ‘Cash-strapped local authorities are now looking

seriously at the benefits of outsourcing PCN processing to a specialist outsourcing company. Using the latest technology and systems, you can maintain and improve on the quality of the PCN processing service while significantly reducing cost, and of course protecting reputation.’ Parking experts urge careful consideration rather

than adopting payment technology for its own sake. Alistair Turk, director of Alpha Parking, said:

‘Technological advances have increased the variety of payment systems to choose between. It is, however, very important to choose the right payment system for the demographics of your users. A mobile payment system only works if you can guarantee that every user of your parking facility has a mobile phone.’
