Chelmsford rewarded for high standards
Chelmsford Borough Council has retained its 20 awards following re- assessments last month, and once again, there has been a reduction in crime-related incidents from 46 in 2008 to 14 in 2009 across all facilities. With vehicle
throughput of some 2.5m, this shows that the facilities are safe and non-threatening for users. Tis is an
excellent achievement, proving what can be gained by good liaison between the various agencies. Each year, a
comprehensive management package is put together for the re-assessments, and this is an example other local authorities could adopt. Should any be interested, they are welcome to contact
Chelmsford Borough Council Parking Services. General management practices are of a high standard, which keeps any problems to an absolute minimum. Mike Bibby, BPA
development manager, south east, said: ‘Once again, the team at Chelmsford Borough Council have shown their commitment to
is spent preparing the management package for myself and the assessor, and all personnel involved are to be congratulated on their achievements, especially with regard to the substantial reduction in crime levels. ‘I would recommend
any local authority already in the scheme or considering becoming accredited to contact Chelmsford with regard to their management practices. I must stress that although crime levels are low, users are not aware of these statistics. It is also imperative that cleaning and maintenance is regularly carried out to create safe and non-threatening environments.’

in the knowledge that the police have vetted the car parks and there are measures in place to create a safe environment.
The Harlequin opted into the Safer Parking Scheme to reassure shoppers of the centre’s commitment to creating high-quality
and safe parking facilities. Regular visits from consultation experts and specialised police officers will continue to assess the facilities to ensure it always reaches the appropriate standards. Michael Stevens, centre manager at the Harlequin, said: ‘The
safety of our shoppers is of vital importance to us, so achieving the award for our seven car parks is a proud achievement. We hope to maintain this high level of safety to ensure our shoppers always feel that we are providing a high- quality parking facility.’
