Palava erupts over airport charges
As passengers returned to the UK following the chaos caused by the volcano under the Eyjafallajokull glacier in Iceland, many were faced with hefty charges for extended stays in airport car parks. Unfortunately they

found the law is not on their side; consumers who stay in a car park beyond the period of time they were booked for are liable for extra costs. EU regulations will not cover these associated costs, which are also unlikely to
be covered by travel insurance policies or the protection offered by paying by credit card. Te BPA backed consumer organisations by appealing for car park operators to show good will towards the already aggrieved consumers. A BPA spokesperson
said: ‘We would encourage car park operators to take into consideration the situation that many travellers will be facing following this unprecedented event.’
Airport operator BAA
responded to the plea by waiving any extra charges for those who overstayed at its car parks. Liverpool’s John Lennon Airport offered reduced car parking rates for the extra parking time accumulated by those who had been left stranded by flight cancellations. Defending the
decision to still charge, a spokesman said: ‘We still have to pay for heating, lighting and car park staff and we can’t do that for nothing.’
