NEW BENCHMARK

An Apollo based fire detection system has been installed by Network Security and Fire to protect people and premises at the Magistrate’s Court in Milton Keynes.

The Milton Keynes Bench was founded in 1979 from an amalgamation of the former local benches at Fenny Stratford, Stony Stratford and Newport Pagnell. The Magistrate’s Court is housed in purpose built premises in the centre of Milton Keynes, which includes a public area, custody suite and six courtrooms, as well as offices for court administrators and the probation service. The original, single loop addressable fire system had been renewed at various points previously, but was no longer fit for purpose. The estates team specified a new analogue addressable system with high sensitivity smoke detection in the custody suite, together with an automated voice alarm (VA) system. Network Security and Fire

recommended a fire system based on Apollo’s Discovery distributed-intelligence technology to meet the requirements for the Magistrate’s Court. Around 260 Discovery devices were used in total, including optical smoke and heat detectors, loop powered beacons, manual call points and interfaces. The fire system is configured around three networked Advanced Electronics control panels.

THE SOUND OF MUSIC

EIC has almost completed a £2m MoD contract with RAF Northolt in London. The specialist building services provider is helping to relocate the Royal Air Force’s Central Band and their Head Quarters Music Service from their current home at RAF Uxbridge to their new, purpose-built headquarters at RAF Northolt. The design and build contract covers electrical and mechanical installation of the heating and ventilation, lighting and power, and the specialist MoD data systems across four separate buildings, built by main contractor Vinci Construction UK, formerly Norwest Holst Construction.

Installation work on the new build blocks, which will house recording studios and rehearsal rooms, recreation workshops, office and training facilities has been completed after a five month programme. Special consideration has been given to

soundproofing the rehearsal rooms and recording studios, where the 80 members of the military band practice. Ventilation ducts have been insulated to reduce noise travelling within the building and the M&E installation has only been fitted to the internal walls, rather than the external walls, in order to reduce the amount of noise which leaves the building through vibration.

TRUE COLOURS

Leighs Paints has signed a contract for Morley-IAS distributor partner, Cook Fire, to install a ZX5Se system across the whole of its manufacturing site in Bolton. The fully networked solution will

incorporate two ZX5Se fire alarm control panels, as par t of an L1 category installation which includes several intrinsically safe areas within the main production environment. In fully meeting the requirements of the Disability Discrimination Act, the addressable Morley- IAS system also includes both audible and visible indicators.

Leighs Paints’ decision follows the

successful installation of Morley-IAS equipment in part of the Bolton site and implementation will get underway in early 2010.

LEARN AS YOU EARN

PEL Services has been awarded the fire detection and emergency lighting maintenance contract for 190 Early Learning Centre stores around the UK. Early Learning Centre opened its first store in the mid 1970s to provide toys that help develop vital skills, making learning fun. Since then the company has gained an enviable reputation for quality and now operates throughout the UK. PEL Services has been awarded a ‘Routine Plus’ maintenance contract for the large majority of these stores by Total Store Maintenance (TSM). The contract allows for two visits per annum for each store for routine testing, inspection and preventative maintenance, along with reactive response to remedy malfunctions 24 hours per day, 365 days per year.

TV TIMES

EnTech (Energy Technologies) has continued its success at the prestigious MediaCityUK development in Salford Quays. This installation is the KNX UK Association Installation of the Year 2009.

Originally awarded the contract by NG Bailey, the MediaCity

project initially required EnTech to design and commission a KNX intelligent building solution for the three BBC buildings within the development. This will give the BBC full control over the lighting throughout the three buildings, offering significant savings on costs and energy. Now, EnTech has been awarded the maintenance contract for Building C, which was completed and handed over in September 2009. Awarded by Cofely (GDF Suez), the contract involves

remote monitoring, error repor ting and a preventative maintenance plan to ensure the system is in the same state as it was on practical completion. The maintenance contract runs over an 18 month period from March 2010 until August 2011. EnTech has secured the contract for the Studio Building,

awarded by Rotary North West. It will provide the Studio Building with KNX presence/constant daylight control giving the ability to control all lights from a central location.

QUIET ENVIRONMENT

The new library at Queen’s University Belfast has used a raft of products from MK Electric and Ackermann to complement the overall quality of the £50m building. Designed by Shepley Bulfinch Richardson and Abbott in association with RPP, the new library draws parallels with the proposed Coleraine Museum/Museum and Library through both its proximity to a historical context and its function.

The new building contains a variety of specifically

controlled internal environments where heating, ventilation and day lighting are critical factors. Common reader spaces, ‘quiet zones’, historic collections, artefact display and digital media are all features of an internal environment that is tailored to meet the challenges of the latest educational thinking. The project deployed MK’s Onix Plus Outlet Lids and

Ackermann Slab Boxes. Onix Plus provides innovative solutions to hard floor

power and data distribution requirements in screed floors with coverings such as laminate, wood, stone and marble. Ackermann Slab Boxes provide the same services (power and data) as a floorbox and deliver a

flexible raised floor solution.
