SILENT MOVIE

Sussex based road safety organisation, GEM Motoring Assist, are 100 per cent behind a new ad campaign from the Sussex Safer Roads Partnership about the importance of wearing a seatbelt. The dynamic silent advert highlights the fundamental necessity of wearing a seatbelt whilst driving and, despite the lack of vehicles crashing or scenes of trauma, it still has an immense impact on the viewer. In the ad, viewers see a family of three

in a role play situation, where the father is sitting in his living room driving. His wife and daughter are watching him when all three spot something out of shot that causes him to swerve. His family leap up off the sofa and clasp their hands around him forming a safety belt. Inevitably he crashes, however, thanks to the seatbelt, he escapes unharmed. David Williams from GEM comments, ‘Putting

on a seatbelt is the single most important thing you do when you get into a car and this message must be ingrained in all of us. However, I believe that it is not always shock tactics including graphic images of crash victims that has the most impact on the public.’

JUST HANG UP

Research by the University of Utah has shown that driving performance is dramatically impaired when using a hands-free mobile phone for 97.5 per cent of drivers. Drivers on hands-free mobile phones took 20 per cent longer to hit the brakes when needed and following distances

increased 30 per cent as the drivers failed to keep pace with simulated traffic while driving. Ellen Booth, campaigns officer for Brake, said, ‘The evidence is overwhelming. Using a hands-free or hand-held phone while driving is dangerous, full stop. It’s time that our politicians took note and put an end to the ridiculous situation where using a hand-held mobile is banned, but using hands-free isn’t. ‘Using a hands-free phone isn’t safer than using a hand-held because it’s the conversation that’s the distraction. The person on the other end of the phone can’t tell when you are coming up to a junction or trying to manoeuvre so they will keep on talking and distracting you and expecting you to answer. To drive safely you need to give your full attention to the road. If you need to make a call or check your messages, pull up in a safe place first.’

DRIVING AMBITION

The launch of the new Movano heralds the start of an ambitious drive by Vauxhall to strengthen its commercial vehicle offering. The company plans to double annual sales volume of the Movano in the UK. The new Movano has a powerful and distinctive

front end design, which now includes the largest Griffin on any vehicle in the company’s history. The cabin is 5.7cm longer than that of the outgoing model and boasts high quality, durable materials and surfaces, excellent all around visibility and a host of practical storage compartments. It also features multi-adjustable seats and a height adjustable steering column. The new range includes panel vans (available in four vehicle lengths and three roof heights), doublecab, platform, chassis and crew cabs as well as combi versions. Vehicles are also well equipped for special conversions or enhancements, and some key versions – like dropside and tipper – will be available ex-works.
