colour fi delity and frame rates and has been adopted widely in the consumer market. This development is now starting to have an impact on the video surveillance market and it promises outstanding image quality compared to analogue CCTV systems. It could be argued that some of
Many organisations use outdoor ready cameras for a variety of surveillance tasks.
That is why thermal cameras and conventional outdoor ready cameras suppor t and complement each other, and why thermal network cameras are a perfect addition to any professional network video surveillance system that needs to secure an area 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
They can be used in many surveillance applications, as both manned and unmanned confi gurations. In either case, a moving object such as a person or a vehicle can be a trigger. The response can range from switching on lights, to steering a PTZ camera to the thermal camera’s detection point, to video recording, to alerting a patrolling guard.
CLEARER IMAGES
Image quality is perhaps the most important feature of any camera and unlike analogue cameras, digital network cameras are equipped with the processing power not only to capture and present images, but also digitally manage and compress them for network transports. The possibility of clearer, sharper images is a long sought quality in the surveillance industry, especially for installations where objects are moving or accurate identifi cation is vital. The rapid transition in the TV market towards high defi nition (HDTV) has brought about incredible improvements in image quality,
these requirements can be met with megapixel network cameras, however the notion of megapixel can be misleading when referring to image quality, as the megapixel label applies solely to the number of image sensor elements of the digital camera. With such high resolution follows huge amounts of image data, which often leads to compromises on transmissible frame rates, meaning the video footage can be jerky. A megapixel camera alone is therefore not synonymous with high image quality. In contrast, a network camera that
complies with any of the given HDTV standards is guaranteed to provide a cer tain resolution, frame rate and colour fi delity, thereby ensuring video quality at all times. HDTV provides up to fi ve times higher resolution than standard analogue TV.
The two most important HDTV
standards are Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers (SMPTE) 296M and SMPTE 2745M, and any camera that complies with the SMPTE standards indicates adherence to HDTV quality and should provide all the benefi ts of HDTV in resolution, colour fi delity and frame rate. Working with progressive scan, a

displays all lines in the image in a single frame so there is no fl ickering effect, network cameras with HDTV performance deliver true colour representation and clear images, and this makes it a highly attractive solution for surveillance operations where greater image detail is required such as road surveillance operations. Outdoor surveillance equipment has
moved on considerably in recent years, and depending on an organisation’s requirements, it is now capable of offering very sophisticated levels of surveillance with the capability to offer excellent image quality which can be easily shared across a network. There are outdoor ready cameras available for every situation and with ease of installation, improved reliability, intruders better beware because there has never been a better time to future proof your outdoor surveillance needs.
